Husband just put the tubular frame up this morning.
Will have to wait a few days for the woven fabric screens.
We usually cover the roof with our huge fig tree branches.
I sure hope the weather cools down.
I hope there are no storm fronts coming through as I only have a 2 day window to finalize mine between flying out of Israel and back into the US. At least I put up the bare frame before I left.
pruzhany,
Our last Sukkot was beautiful in the beginning, then On the last 2 days it rained and the temp. Dropped drastically. Our guests had small children so we had to bring it inside.
Isn't it early to be putting up a sukkah? We don't usually start ours until after Yom Kippur. Is there any regulation about when to put it up?
No. The only main rule is the material the roof is to be up of. I put up only the frame before I left for Israel. The wood for the roof is sitting on the ground nearby and I will go into my forest for trimmings for covering the roof upon my return to the US. Keep on mind my home sits on 10 acres in the southern US, so I have plenty of open space. Many people who wait to the days before it, have space limitations. Some make the mistake of placing it on a covered porch/deck. Read the link I posted earlier in this thread.
There is a regulation you are correct.
But we are racing against time over here. Our schedule is that for my husbands sake, it's best to do in parts before Yom Tov.
According to Halacha (Orthodox Jewish Law) you may build the Sukkah from 30 days prior to the Yom Tov. If it was made more than 30 days before the holiday, and you do not have in mind that it is being made for Succot, all you have to do is remove some Sechach and replace it and have in mind that it is for Succot and then it is Kosher. If it was put up anytime in the year, and it was done having in mind that it is for Succot then it is good.
Thank you for all the feedback. We will probably start putting it up a little earlier in the future. Although, for me it should really feel like fall. :-) And with the early holiday schedule combined with a late heat wave...it's just humid and buggy outside. We are supposed to get a cold front coming in soon and the temps should drop by Sukkot, so it should be pleasant.
last year we had people over every day for dinner or lunch.
I think this year we will just do about 4 nights with guests.
West Nile is Rampant here, so we will break out the citronella and bomb the yard with sprays.
Now, to plan the menu.........
