I don't know why but I've always thought them cousins.

Now I've literally just found out that they're half-siblings! And yet such a marriage is against Jewish Law so...how do rabbis explain this??

Just curious; thanks.

From what I understand, Abraham was her uncle. Abe's brother, Haran, had a daughter, Sarah, making her Abe's niece.

Before the Torah was given, certain behaviors were not forbidden.

And entire humanity, according to OT, was conceived from brothers and sisters anyway, since A&E children did it. So why bother with cousins and other related intermarries?

I understood that they had the same father and different mothers...

Gen 11:26. Terach has 3 sons -- Avram, Nachar and Haran.
29 says that Nachor and Avram took wives, "Sarai...[and] Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Yiscah"

The Imrei Shefer says that Avram and Nachor married daughters of the recently deceased Haran to preserve his memory. Rashi says that Yiscah is Sarai.

I’ll have to look at that again...
