Hello there,

I'm going to be attending UMKC as a graduate student and am currently looking into neighborhoods to live in. Does anyone know of some resources I can look into for apartment rentals? Craigslist is not a big help at all. There is a possibility that I will have a roommate but if that falls through I'm wondering where the best neighborhoods would be for a young female graduate student.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much,

~Heather

Do a search in forum for other 'UMKC where to live' threads as there are quite a few. If you want to be walking distance to campus, best option methinks is near the Plaza library. Otherwise might describe a bit more what you want. W and S side of Plaza to W side of Midtown is what many suggest to single females. Downtown could be doable if you want the loft thing, about 15-20 minute commute/bus.

BTW, here's a city guide to give some context. UMKC students get an included annual bus pass as part of tuition...

I saw from your other postings you are into theatre design. KC has a pretty decent theatre scene for its size. UMKC will definitely get you tied into the various circles but also check kcstage.com. The KC Art Institute also has its own flavor of stage performance thing going on, like Whoop De Doo productions. And check into Quixotic productions. There's an unusual attraction to highly produced haunted houses in KC, doesn't exist anywhere like this - might not be a fit but could be a great experimentfor theatre design. Fringe Fest every summer is the local theatre jam session. It won't be LA but you might be surprised how well you can get connected here.

How much are you looking to spend in rent each month? And what kind of place do you want to be in? Do you want something walkable?

Pretty much everyone I know finds their place on Craigslist, so if you're not finding anything it might be that your budget or specific wants in an apartment are unrealistic -- or maybe you just found it overwhelming! One option you can try is Padmapper.com; most of the listings come from Craiglist anyway, but they lay it all out on a map and it can be easier to see through the mess.

I'd consider looking in Westport, but I'd need to know more about what you like to say for sure.

Feel free to come back and ask any follow-up questions; we're happy to help!
