I tried searching the forums with no luck. Anyone have any information about the large old home that sits on the NE corner of 39th and Crysler in Independence? I can't find anything other than modern real estate listing info on it. Built in 1840. I'm researching the history of that neighborhood but nothing pops up for that property. Thanks in advance.

Dr. Everett Saunders owned the house from the late fifties until ? His medical office was on the south side of the square on the second floor in a building just west of the Plaza Theater/DuVall's location. At some point he moved his office but I am not sure where.

Thank you. Took me forever to even find that info. I remember my dad telling me a Dr. owned it, but I don't know if he ever told me his name. It looks like Saunders bought it from a Sweedish guy named Gustav Olson in 1962, and prior to that I'm stuck again. I don't know why I'm having such a hard time tracing such a big, old, and obvious home.

At some point the home was a business, as there is a commercial fire suppression system installed and other signs indicating a business, but I can't even find records of what that was. I've never had to dig this hard for info.

The modern improvements were done a few years ago when it was/or was to be a bed and breakfast. Jackson County no longer has property records prior to 1960 online. For those you must go to the courthouse on the Square. While there stop in at the Jackson County Historical Society archives (just down the hall). They may have info on it.

Good luck in your search. Please post what you find, a lot of people are curious about it.

In 1904 the property was owned by Lambert Ott, as evidenced by the Jackson County plat book. The 39th (then called Sewell Ave.) & Crysler intersection is dead center in section 22. The square dot above the second "2" of "22" designates the Doc Saunders house.

The 1897 plat map shows what appears to be "Margurite Chambers" as the owner. The quality of this map's image is hard to read.

And the 1877 plat (the earliest I know where to find) the owner is "J Chambers Est."

Dr. Saunders was well known around Independence and treated many patients
including myself back in the day.
His practice was on the second floor of a very old building up on the Independence
square.
I tried to find out when he passed away but couldn't find any information on it.
Don't know if he had children or any of his personal life.
He was a good doctor from what i can remember, always fixed me up.
