That is a loaded question! What is your favorite type of bbq? I would first try Arthur Bryants, Joe's Kansas City and Q39 and go from there.

Slap's, LC's and Oklahoma Joes...all with Arthur Bryant's Original sauce.

There is no bbq place in this town worth avoiding.

Woodyard BBQ is my favorite.

Joe's KC and Crazy Good Eats (a new one that I wouldn't drive out of the way for, but still good) are both good too.

I've heard great things about Q39 but needing a reservation for a BBQ joint? Seems crazy to me.

Q39, LC's, Jack Stack, Bryants, woodwards, gates and many more. One thing about KC bbq is there is a lot of different styles at different places in KC. Most people like specific items of different places, but it's all good.

No one ever mentions Danny Edwards. I think it's an underrated spot, but its hours of operation are limited, so plan ahead.

No one ever mentions Hayward's either, which was big when I lived there. I remember the grand opening of the brand new place at the top of the hill on Antioch and we enjoyed going there a lot in the 80s.

I just Googled it and see that it has been sold and has moved....to an unimpressive appearing older, smaller place in Lenexa with menu prices that appear to be on the high side. I guess that might explain it.

Bryant's later became my favorite after I got used to their sauce. After my first visit, I thought someone had sabotaged the bottle at my table. After my third visit, I couldn't settle for any other sauce.

The aforementioned Q39 is taking over the old Haywards space.

Do you rmember the original Haywards just south of 95th on the west side of Antioch? You could barely get in the door on the weekends.

I'm fond of Smokehouse in Gladstone and Bryants

Yep, I sure do. Went there many times before the new place opened in '81.

Thanks for that update on Q39. I had never heard of them and wondered who the heck they were. Seems strange, given the growth in south Overland Park since '81, that the new owners of Hayward's found that facility "too big" - whereas Hayward packed it full in the 80s.
