Helicopters are money pits, unfortunately. That's why KSHB (41) and KCTV (5) share the cost of a chopper. KMBC (9) has been scaling back the hours they lease, and we (WDAF) got rid of ours altogether several years ago.

KCMO is a radio station, by the way. Those call letters haven't been used on a TV station since 1983, when KCMO-TV separated from the radio stations and became KCTV.

Remember when they kept it simple?... 6 to 6:30 newscast. 10 to 10:30 newscast. I always wondered who the hell sits through and watches an hour long newscast on Fox4. Nothing against any of the staff there, but who are they trying to market to?

Local TV news typically targets women 25-54. All TV station ownership groups are pushing for more, more and more news, which is cheaper to produce than buying syndicated programs. FOX stations were just ahead of the curve in that regard. We do 59.5 hours of local news per week, and that's not even tops among FOX-affiliated stations.

Gotcha. I've always wondered why the Fox network never used 9-10 as a prime-time slot like the other 3 networks. Again, maybe its the cost like you said regarding the newscasts.

There's a Fox affiliate in St. Joe now. I don't know how they do it with such a small DMA that also has to compete with wdaf.

This seems to be a national trend. From what I have seen, news channels around the country have ditched full time choppers for "on call" pilots and only use them for the biggest stories.

Where we live, we get all the new channels for both DC and Baltimore and I don't think DC has any full time new helicopters, which may have more to to with super strict flight restrictions than anything and Baltimore is down to a couple of part time leased R44s like KC is.
