I originally posted this on the Kansas forum but was told I might do better with responses if I also posted here so here goes...

My husband is retiring from the military soon and we are looking to relocate to Johnson County to be closer to my family in Topeka. My 6 yr old son has a dual diagnosis of gifted and high functioning autism (formerly Asperger's) and has an IEP with his current school district here in California. He also regularly sees an ophthalmologist as he has had 4 surgeries so far for various vision issues.

I'm focusing on the JoCo area as I feel the school funding will be better to give my son more options in special ed and also because the health care options around the KC area are so strong.

I'm really hoping to hear some of your experiences with Olathe vs Blue Valley districts for special ed. I haven't heard great things about Shawnee Mission district's handling of special ed students so I have taken them off my list.

Also if anyone has helpful tips as to groups that might cater to those on the high functioning autism spectrum (meetups, camps, psychologists, ABA, etc.) I greatly appreciate all the info I can get!
