I have an akita that is sweet as can be but because of "aggressive breed" restrictions on apartments I am finding it hard to find a place to rent. I work around the Brookside area as well as in Overland Park so around either of those areas would be perfect for me. Does anyone know of any places that allow so called aggressive breed dogs? I am a little bit at a loss here because I am having no problem with finding a place for my labrador but my akita who is somehow friendlier than my lab is the issue. I am open to apartments, duplexes, townhomes, etc. My rent maximum is probably $750. Thank you for your help!

I would contact (or visit the websites of) city government for municipalities you're looking at renting in. You should be able to get information on animal ordinances pertinent to the community. I'm not aware if management companies can supercede city ordinances on breed banning in either MO or KS. They may be able to, as breed restriction lists are usually put out by the insurance companies that insure their properties, and you would have limited freedom as a renter vs. a homeowner. In my previous home, they could, but it was another state, and privately managed military housing on federal property, to boot. At any rate, if you contact city governments about municipal ordinances, you could probably get that information, as well.

Sorry I'm not more help, but my dogs are typically not found on breed ban lists, or I'd be more familiar

I own a rental property in Blue Springs and my insurance has a list of aggressive breeds that I can't have. I think that's the problem more than city ordinances. You will probably have the best luck going through private individuals rather than property management companies. I personally think the aggressive breed thing is stupid. It's all about the owners. A properly raised and trained dog is fine, no matter what the breed is. Banning the breeds is the easy way out and all it does is fill animal shelters.

LOL, I read this as " renting with an aggressive beard " I know 1880's beards are coming back in style among the hipster crowd, but I am not sure there are any apartments that would deny you an apartment due to a really heinous beard!

Renting with an aggressive beard is likely NO problem whatsoever in KC!

I'm actually having problems finding a place to rent with my labrador (though I don't have to worry too much about it until October)... Most places stipulate under 75 lbs (some go even to 45, 35, or even 20 -- is that even a dog anymore?), and also have a list of restricted breeds (I was sure Akitas weren't on the list, but I just checked and they are, anyway my rent's way higher than $750 -- which is why I want to move in October actually). [my labrador's 86 lbs]

I remember looking at apartments in Overland Park recently and there were some that said pet interview required (unfortunately I can't find them right now). You could perhaps try one of those? Also, you could try renting a duplex, those didn't seem to have any stipulation on weight, but I wasn't looking at breed.

Good luck!
