I hope I'm allowed to share this. I've been reading this online magazine everyday for a couple of months and have learned a great deal about south central KY. It's for locals but gives people like myself a flavor of what the town of Columbia and the surrounding counties are about.
I had no idea some counties in this area of KY are considered Appalachia. There's so much pride and community awareness and so many positive elements. The magazine has everything in it from awards kids get in school, police reports, lost pets, and what's cooking at local restaurants. It's this sense of community and pride that makes many small towns in KY a great place to visit and maybe live. There's nothing like this where I now live and is one of the biggest reasons I'm going to retire in KY.

Many of the families that live in Columbia/Adair County have been there for generations hence the cohesive sense of community that you recognize and appreciate.

Good Luck on your retirement there.

Honestly, I haven't decided yet what county and town, but Columbia is definitely on my list. It, along with two or 3 other towns have almost everything I desire in retirement. I need to make one more visit to KY and make a decision and then really start planning and looking at houses. Thank you for your good wishes.
