Congrats! It's a beautiful area...although you being from Up-State NY it may be a bit of culture shock ( southern style ) and your going to experience some VERY hot summers, but other than that you'll love it. Enjoy The Purchase!

Eric,
Thanks for the Congrats! We actually had our home inspection today, it looks like we will be closing mid-August!
I'm good with the southern style, it's actually the main reason we selected Kentucky to retire in. We spent quite a bit of time there and always loved it! I am ready for the hot summers, I actually love the heat and humidity! Whenever it gets hot here and people get cranky, I just chuckle to myself and think; bring it on!! I will definitely enjoy the summer heat as a trade-off for the winters we have here in upstate NY!

Today is my Wife's birthday, our Son bought her a Kentucky State flag as part of her birthday present!!
She is all in with being a "Kentuckian" as her Mom's Family was originally from a small town in Western KY!!

We may have to ed-uh-mu-cate you and coach you on being Kentuckian.
Lesson 1: "You must become an obsessed UK Basketball fan!! GO CATS!!
Lesson 2: "You must learn phrases like "well, bless your heart!" Or "Just bless his/her little heart" say " you-all" or "ya'll"

Corn on the Cob - "Roastin Ears" or " roastin ear'd corn"
Pintos Beans - "Dried Beans"
Iced- Tea - "Sweet Tea"
Burgoo, a thick hearty, spicy soup, with either Beef, Chicken, even Rabbit, Squirrel or Mutton ( very tasty )
Oh yeah "Mutton" - Hickory smoked Sheep or Lamb can be pulled or sliced, usually on sandwiches with an onion and pickle slice and "dippin sauce" ( vinegar based )
Banana Pudding ( mmmmmmm!! )
Pork on Toast - thats Purchase style western Ky BBQ...

Notice everything revolves around food? As I think of more stuff I will let you know..
Ohh yeah Ky expressions:
Over yonder or yonder ( used frequently )
Kentuckians pronounce " Tuesday" like "choos-dee"
"Back through that country" or "Way back through the country there"
Ex: "when I was a young feller I used to travel over the hills around the ole homeplace and walk alot back through that country there.
Hill is called a "Knob" a hollow is a "holler" a wide flat valley is a "bottom" or " the bottoms"
Etc etc..
Oh yeah for lots of people in Ky " vacation" means taking the 2 weeks or so in Oct or Nov off for hunting season EVERYONE in Kentucky:
Deer hunts
Coon hunts
Rabbit hunts
Squirrel hunts
Fox hunts

Hunting is the official state activity of Ky LOL!

To Sundance, WOW, could you be more of a jerk with your posts? Seriously, they were absolutely pointless in this thread.

To MoMan73, many congrats on your new house, and may you and yours enjoy many wonderful years in Kentucky. (I live in NH but have family in Ky ... I do sometimes wonder about moving there myself.)

Eric,
I've been practicing my "Kentucky", I have my Wife's Grandfathers favorite sayin' down pat; "sho' 'nuf"! I always remember him saying that! I've been working on my y'all! I was with a bunch of the guys one weekend and pulled a piece of grass and started chewin' on it! I'm working really hard on making the transition!
Oh and... I am an avid hunter so that part should be easy for me to fall into! Thanks for the lessons, keep 'em coming!

Karen, I wasn't even going to address sundance's comments but she hit a nerve with me! Thanks for the kind words... we are definitely ready to defend our new "adopted" home!

kygman, Sheri said "Thanks for the birthday wishes"... who knows maybe y'all do know each other (see how I worked the phrase in there?)!!

I've heard that expression as well. My grandfather ( grandparents are usually called "memaw" and " popaw" or "ma'maw" and pa or "pop" also granny...
Anyways my " popaw" used to say: "Whhhhhyyyy heeelll faaar" and my grandmother (granny) calls all the girls "sis" I dont care who you are and all the boys "son"
