Pretty Please!

Hubby's work just asked him if he'd be up for a transfer and we said yes. There's no official offer yet, but we should hear something by the end of the week.

He'll be working around Nashville Rd between Campbell Lnn and Dishman Ln. Ideally I'd like to rent somewhere close to work. We're in the Dallas suburbs right now, and the commute is terrible.

How walkable is that area? In my head I'm envisioning walking to the farmers market or to the grocery store. Also I'd like to be fairly close to an elementary school. We're homeschooling right now, but that could change.

How is the political climate? I'm a die hard libral and not very religious. I figure with the college there Bowling Green might not be a bad place for me.

What sort of extra curricular activities are there for the tween set? My daughter is 9 and I like to keep her busy. I did notice that dance classes are about 1/4th the cost that they are here, so that was nice!

I have to admit that the lower COL is appealing. We're struggling in Dallas, but it looks like we could be fairly comfortable in BGKY.

I'm sure there are a TON of questions I forgot to ask.

Thanks!

This is not a bad area of town, overall. Of course, while there are one or two kind of sketchy parts of Bowling Green (closer to the Barren River,) those "bad" areas pale in comparison to Dallas' bad areas. Rent is anywhere from $450-600/mo. for a nice apartment in the city. In Bowling Green, the drive from the far south (where you'll be) to the far north side takes 12-15 minutes, or maybe 20-27 minutes during what rush hour they have. So, I wouldn't worry.

The most walkable area of town will be closer to WKU's campus and downtown, sorry. Those are, however, only 2.5 or so miles from the Campbell/Nashville area. Maybe you could buy something downtown, close to Main Street or Scottsville Road, 6-7 blocks from campus, but still be just far enough away from students to hear a whole bunch of "racket."

Any place you live in BG, you won't be any more than two miles from an elementary school. If you're going to enroll your kids in Kentucky public schools, elementary schools are the best. The Bowling Green and Warren County systems, like the vast majority of Kentucky school systems, aren't much to pine about, especially at the junior and senior high levels.

The area inside Campbell Lane is moderately liberal b/c of WKU, but it might still seem conservative to you (I think north Dallas, Richardson, and Plano are the strongest conservative suburbs, but the Metroplex otherwise has a pretty diverse political climate.) Outside Campbell Lane, it's rural Kentucky kickin' in, so it will be conservative territory.

Hmmmm...don't know, I don't have small children.

Maybe we'll switch places. I'm wanting to move to Texas (Ft. Worth, San Antonio or Houston would be my choice, though.) Good luck in whatever you decide to do!

You mentioned renting. Fairways at Hartland is in town and close to everything and they're nice. Find Bowling Green apartments and homes for rent in Kentucky at Fairways At Hartland.
There are probably homes for rent in the area as well.

That's great to know! I was seriously limiting our options based on commuting time.

Thanks for the starting point! Does anyone have an easy spot to find houses for rent? We've got puppies, and I think I might have better luck in a house.

I live in Bowling Green and have most of my life. You will not be able to rent a nice house or even a spacious apartment for less than 650.00 to 900.00 a month in a good location. The two school systems in Bowling Green are actually very good depending on the district you live in. If in the city district, try to get in the Potter Gray or McNeal area for elementary. If county district, get in the Briarwood, Richpond, or Natcher district for elelmentary. These schools feed into the better two of the high schools right now. We are getting a new elementary, middle, and high school soon though so districts may change. I would contact the school boards.

Bowling Green is very diverse surprisingly. There were 11 languages spoken at my son's high school. This makes for a community that is very varied. This is the Bible belt though and to many church is very much part of their lives, but there are plenty of nonreligous people also.

As far as walking for shopping and such, it is not very practical here unless you can walk great distances...some do I guess. There is a downtown you could walk around and shop in but I doubt you would want to live in that area. It is a lot of college student rentals and frat houses.

I think you will like it here. Bowling Green is growing very fast but still maintains sort of a small town charm. It is also nice that we are about an hour from both Louisville and Nashville.

There are lots of liberals in Bowling Green. We proudly embrace the idea of smoking liberally and liberally packing guns, etc. It's a great town. The surrounding towns are quite liberal, too.

Is there any reason (other than college kids) that I don't want to live downtown? I'm ok with old, I'm more worried about safety. I would love to live close enough to the library to walk there daily. (yes, this walking thing is important to me! LOL)

I've found dance classes, and art lessons for my daughter also, and love the convenience of being so close to them.

And when I say downtown I'm looking at the area in the circle that is University blvd, 6th ave. and Laurel Ave right?

Thanks!
Amanda
