Question Big Hill

My husband and I recently traveled through Big Hill on the way to see where his great-grandfather used to live. He hadn't been there in a long time and saw the the "Big Hill" had been cut down considerably. We were wondering how this was done. They obviously used dynamite, but since it's such a mountainous area, did they do one side at a time? There doesn't seem to be a road that traffic could have been detoured to. There was a lot of mountain to get rid of!
