Hi: I'm new to the Tri Cities area and yesterday I was talking with one of the neighbors. She said that boiled cabbage was served at New Years because it would bring money. Black eye peas brought good luck. Any other "unique" customs that you or your family have for the holidays? Just curious. Thanks

I think a lot of people in the south have Hoppin' John and cornbread for New Years.

Not really a custom, but our family has sort of a belief that what ever activity you are doing when the New Year comes in at midnight is an activity that you will spend a lot of time doing in the New Year. I fell asleep, so I guess this is going to be a very restful year for me.

My family has always had hog jowls, or some sort of fatback, with blackeyed peas and greens. I think that's probably the hillbilly variant, while people who are a little more citified eat boiled cabbage with bacon or something similar.

Thanks for the link to Hoppin' John. Never heard it referred to as that, but it does help explain a little bit about our traditions.

I made killer black-eyed peas with greens and ham bits. Crushed up some real cornbread with corn in it, on top of it, and it was to die for. After last year, I'll do whatever superstition I can.

By the way, the beans signify coins and the greens symbolize green money. The dish is in the hopes of a very prosperous new year and I extend those wishes to all. I'm a Yankee that's lived in The South for 15 years and I have never heard of cooking cabbage. I save that for the corned beef for St. Paddy's day.
