I have to pretty much agree with Whatsupdoc81 and must add that Kingsport isn't too good for seniors either. Try to get a doctor who accepts Medicare. LOL. Without a doubt your can save money here compared to most other places but you will be giving up much to do it. However part of that same savings will be eaten up by the 9.5% sales tax that varies a bit according to location. I believe the OP is from MD. The one item that you will be giving up is fresh, and I mean fresh, seafood and that included crabs. There are lots of home rentals in the area you can try craigslist for one. Absolutely rent first I have met several folks that have moved here and moved out the first chance they had. One couple from FL left because of the allergies, another couple from FL left because they could not find adequate medical care just to mention a few.

If you don't have a job lined up before moving, it really is not a good idea to come to Johnson city.

Bristol has a NASCAR track and that is ALL they have.

Johnson City has a college, yep. People in Kingsport and Bristol go to JC if they want to "party" or live it up on the town. Its pretty much just a strip of chain restaurants with a few ****ty college bars thrown in between.

Worst metro area in Tennesse by far. If it can even be called a metro area. Go to Chattanooga, Nashville, Memphis or even Knoxville if you have to... although its not much better.

Hmmm
Dredging up a 2 year old post to bash an area with sweeping generalized statements........claiming statistical data that is totally false.....ending with suggestions that people should go elsewhere.............I smell something and it doesn't smell like flowers.

Totally agree. Finding a high paying job relative to income and cost of living in the Tri-Cities can be difficult.

I don't think it's a piece of cake anywhere right now. In JC, unemployment is still below the national average.

Well, I never bashed the people on their intelligence or looks of the tri-cities. Nor eluded to some kind of urban chic, glamour, metrosexual mishmash that it might missing. The people are friendly and some of them not bad looking by anymeans. But as one of TN metro areas which (city-data classifies it as), its got some serious catching up to do with the other top 4.

You live there and love it, good for you. It has got some good outdoor activites, but come winter, it gets to be a pretty boring place.

Kingsport: Population in July 2008: 44,473. Population change since 2000: -1.0%[LEFT]Right off the city-data homepage.

Boring is as boring does. Life is never boring for me, no matter where I live. Life is what you make it. It just so happens that the Tri Cities region has a ton of interesting, attractive things to do, get involved in, see. No, I would not categorize it as boring by any means.
