As all my fellow Knoxvillians know, this past summer provided for a lot of evil crabgrass overgrowth. Part of my lawn is entirely crabgrass as a result. I decided to call around and see what some of the local lawn care companies (Allied, Truegreen, Lawn Doctor, etc.) would charge to fix the crabgrass problem. I received quotes in the $1000 range. Not wanting to shell out that much cash for my relatively small lawn (~4000 square feet of it needs to be treated), I am wondering if anyone has recommendations for either: A) How to reseed and start over or B) a good lawn care company that can do it for a reasonable price.

Thanks

I would recommend aerating and overseeding your yard this fall, around Oct. Crabgrass dies in the winter. Very important...in the early spring/late winter, before crabgrass begins popping up, buy a fertilizer with crabgrass preventer. Keeping on it in the early spring is the key. This is my advice, though others may recommend otherwise. It is also important to select good quality, drought tolerant seed. I would recommend Rebel turf fescue, provided that you don't have a zoysia or bermuda lawn. Avoid Kentucky bluegrass, as it will fry during a hot summer, and Kentucky 31, which is rougher and is not a dense turf-former. A dense, healthy lawn will help prevent those bald spots that crab loves to invade.
