The best part of cooking Thanksgiving dinner is having the leftovers. My ex-mother-in-law always cooks a turkey, whether she gets invited to someone else's house, or not. Excellent idea.

That is an excellent idea!

One Thanksgiving in Memphis I went to the Peabody for their fabulous (and I mean f-a-b-u-l-o-u-s) Thanksgiving buffet. It was the most incredible meal I've ever had outside of France. BUT, I had no leftovers! It was awful! I wanted my turkey & dressing & cranberry sandwiches, the turkey salads, turkey tetrazini, pumpkin pie for breakfast and midnight snacks, and on and on. I vowed to never again go out to eat for Thanksgiving.

I think your mother-in-law and I would get along just fine.

Ex-mother-in-law. You probably wouldn't get along with my current mother-in-law, unless you fancy sociopaths.

However, the ex's mom is a wonderful woman. Too bad I didn't get along with the ex!

I had the same thing happen to me on Thanksgiving. To make it worse, I had no food in the fridge, and nothing was open, and the restaurants were all booked!

Thanks for all the feedback. We actually ordered from applewood b/c that is my son-in-law's favorite restaurant in the mountains. I agree about the home cooking and normally would but with all the distraction of trying to get the house sold and packed up and all the million of details that entails, cooking will have to wait till next year when I can REALLY enjoy doing it in a nice, new roomy kitchen!

I bet you'll have a delicious Thanksgiving meal. Enjoy being up in the mountains! I know you'll have a great time.

Default Thanksgiving in Pigeon Forge

Did Christmas in Gatlinburg last year at Gatlinburg Falls (Cabin Rentals, just inside Gatlinburg coming from Pigeon Forge) and got a cooked turkey from a grocery store around the corner. I think it was Food Lion, but I'm not sure. You could call Gatlinburg Falls office in G'burg and ask them the name of the store. It was yummy..we all thought so. We used the juice from the pan (added to a roux) to make gravy. Just bring a baggie of flour from home and pick up butter from the store to do the roux. Also your favorite seasonings..I use a little Chop House seasoning. We made stuffing from prepared stovetop dressing mixed with prepared (mixed and baked) jiffy brand cornbread and enough chix broth to soak it...put it in the oven at 350 for about 30 minutes. Awesome. Surely you could bring already prepared at home side dishes and dessert(s) in disposable pans. You can so do this with the greatest of ease. It'll be awesome. After you eat you can hike it off on the trails.
