Hi, my husband and I would like to relocate our family to Tennessee and are trying to find the best area for us. His current work has multiple locations in Tennessee which helps us out. Our children our 11, 8 & 5 and we love to be outdoors (hence the move from cold Chicago) Here is a list of things important to us when considering an area to live.

Opportunity for homeschoolers - at least through the primary grades. Co-op, outings, athletics.

Good secondary schools (high school) both in academics and athletics.

Club/travel athletics, particularly volleyball and soccer. Local baseball, basketball and soccer leagues. Adult athletics also - volleyball and softball.

Lots of areas for family walks, bike rides and swimming. We come from an area full of lakes, and forest preserves with trails and love to visit them.

Boating opportunities and possible lake front lots not built on yet or 1-3 acre lots not built on yet.

Thanks in advance for any help!

All of your criteria is possible. Its just going to be difficult to find them all in the same location.
You last c criteria of lake front lots, and lots between 1-3 acres are going to be especially tough when trying to fit in your other needs / wants.

What is your budget?

Welcome, and Knoxville would have you covered, and from all the information you shared, probably west, with all the good schools, Farragut, Bearden and Hardin Valley. Will be hard to find that size lake property, unless your willing to commute from Blount county, as some lots there that would work. Good luck in your search.

Don't move to Knoxville. The town is backwards in thinking and everything else. Choose Nashville.

Knoxville area is a nice place especially for the outdoor enthusiast. I recommend renting in west knoxville area and look around after you get to know the area for the place that has all you want.

Backwards thinking???? Remember this is a relative concept. If you come from the most modern urban city you may think the whole of TN is slow but if your from some back holler then Knoxville is the big city.

Look at Maryville.

1. Schools are recognized as the best (tied with Farragut and Knoxville Catholic Academy)
2. The Greenbelt trail runs right through Maryville and is a hotspot for running, biking, walking.
3. Sports are highly competitive (ex: HS football is sponsored by Nike).
4. Neighborhoods are clean and people are friendly.
5. Everything is a short distance away ... Knoxville market square (22 minutes away), hiking in the Smokies (45 min away), etc.

I will share that when we moved our three boys to the area, we thought we'd have no trouble getting onto soccer teams. My oldest had been voted most valuable player and my other two had regularly played up 2-3 years beyond their ages. HOWEVER, in this area the coaches strongly favor their loyal players. My son was put on the JV team his Senior year. After waiting patiently to earn his spot on the Varsity team, he quit and switched to track. He broke the school record and placed in State so I don't think the soccer blacklisting was a talent thing.
