Delta-style hot tamales are served five days a week at a small restaurant on Magnolia Avenue.

The dish was formed in the flood plains of the Mississippi and is wrapped in the history of slavery.

"People want to know, what is a Delta-style hot tamale. What can you tell them? It's beef rolled in meal. That's all we can tell them," said Clara Robinson, owner of Mary's Hot Tamales, 1931 E. Magnolia Ave.

Unlike the tamales most East Tennesseeans are familiar with (cornmeal and beef tied in the middle and on both ends), a Delta-style tamale is long and slender, resembling a cigar, and is open on one end.

Mississippian's favorite tamale recipe has been her East Tenn. livelihood for nearly 20 years : Food : Knoxville News Sentinel

I presume you've already tried Chandlers BBQ? There's also BBQ across from Mary's and one a litle closer to town tucked away behind the starlite lounge on Jessamine.
