I truly appreciate how warm the folks on this board have been during my pre-move exploration of Eastern Tennessee.

Now, I have a date of August 16th when I will arrive in Tennessee to start living. What I would like to get is generalized and/or specific advise from those that have lived in the area for some time, and from those that have relocated to the area from the Coast or from the North (originally from Ohio here).

Thanks in advance, i really look forward to reading all each of you have to offer!

Example advice:
*I would watch the speed traps they set up on such and such road/highway

*Get your vehicle registered in so many days of arriving

*Make sure you do such and such, as it is customary when meeting new neighbors in TN

There you go!

Just slow down and be friendly. Folks around here don't have a fast forward button. Things will get done but get used to chatting and smiling and telling about yourself. People will want to get to know you and want you to know them. Take the time to do that.

When you go to get your TN driver's license, people will tell you, "Oh go to Knoxville Center Mall--that's the easiest place". Well, you can't. Knoxville Center mall will not do any driver's license for people who just moved from out of state (they will do renewals for in-state, I think). I don't know why, but you will be wasting your time. You will have to drive to the Strawberry Plains office (right off the interstate--easy to find) or, I think, the downtown office. The Strawberry Plains office doesn't do license tags, but you can go to the mall office. I think they asked for my driver's license, so I would take care of that first. We moved from Lexington, KY last year and love it here. I'm sure you will, too. Getting our tag and license was one of the more trickier things to do here.

Not sure where you are locating (East, West, North, or South)but I found the driver's license office on the West side to be super fast considering I was used to waiting in line and there was no line there You do have to have two proofs of address. And they don't consider junk mail it must be bill or lease.

You'll need to register the car in the county you'll be living in, so wait to do that until you have a permanent address.
The driver's license you can do anywhere. I think there's a license renewal place not far from where you are working in Morristown. Ask you fellow employees.

The deal with out of towners getting their license is this... it has to be a DOT state approved sight. There is one off of 25E in Morristown. I believe you have 30 days from the time you get up here to get it changed over. And make sure that you ask them several times the things to bring. We asked for a list and when we went they forgot to tell us one other thing. I can't remember what it was but by the time we got done with them there was some aggravation in the air buddy! And, to top it off... I became a man. And I have no distinguishing male features.
