Hi, as you probably know, I spent the past weekend in Knoxville with the family. We were in the downtown area on Sunday around lunch time and what a beautiful area around the river, the views from the bridges, the streets were nice and clean, wife was impressed.

We saw a lot of construction on I-40 when you're driving from East to West, it's clear that they're duplicating it, am I correct on this assumption ? Does anyone know more details ? perhaps hiknapster or JMT or anyone else. Thanks

This is going to be a disaster. The feeder highway (640) has been incredibly backed up as it is. When they shut down that part of I-40, and they put everyone through 640, it will become a nightmare. I am not kidding. From what I read, this will be shut down for months, maybe more. I will check tomorrow.

JMT is on vacation.

Wow. So they will be shutting down I-40 most likely. Most likely the final results will be worth it but I know what you mean.

Official line is that I-40 through downtown will be shut for 18 months.

Sounds like another argument for living nowhere near it/in a place you don't need it. That is part of why I'm thrilled to be on the south side.

Well, one thing is - that construction is a good thing for the construction workers. So, that news is good news to hubby and myself for our move to the area.

I know, I know - it's slow, it's inconvenient - just don't get mad at the construction workers - it's only their job, and eventually, their work will make it easier for you.

blessings, Shen

Unlike other cities, Knoxville did not realize the benefit of completely removing I40 through downtown Knoxville and TDOT is replacing the current I40 with a bigger, faster I40 through downtown. It is a shame but one that can not be stopped.

I-65 pass through downtown Indianapolis with its updated 4 lanes each way and I really do not see it as negative. I helps the flow of traffic and Indy downtown passed through a renovation for the past few years that brought a safe and clean environment. I disagree with your comment.

I really think that a slow highway with 1 or 2 lanes will cause problems for a downtown area.
