Having eliminated the eastern half of the country due to the previously listed issues, Las Vegas is an excellent base from which to explore the west coast. Airfare to Las Vegas from NY is reasonable, long term accomodations are economic and relatively new, there is plenty of local entertainment and sites, and driving to many west coast points is easy compared to driving on the east coast.
We are not interested in clubbing or trendy vacation spots and don't need to be pampered. We enjoy the bi-coastal feeling at a reasonable price we get being based in Las Vegas for two months.

The only complaint I have with the Vegas summer is the intensity of the sun. The sunshine is incredibly powerful, and will cook your car if you park it out in the sun to go the store. Feels like the whole car might ignite if you struck a match inside it.

Now that said, I have no problem with regular sunshine, just pointing out the biggest downside of it.

Here in central Pennsylvania the humidity is so high that visibility is only five miles. The temps were well over 100 degrees. Nearly any desert environment is more pleasant than what we're receiving.
