This was reported on the BBC news a little while ago. I thought some of you might find it interesting.

BBC News - Why 'Sin City' has so many single fathers

"Las Vegas, known for famous casinos and adult entertainment, is also home to more single fathers per capita than any other US city, according to census data."

Nevada, (IMHO) is much more balanced between the sexes in terms of custody agreements than other states. The courts tend to give joint legal custody to both parents with primary physical custody going to whichever parent can provide the most stable home. You also have to have divorce counseling with the emphasis being on free access to both parents, and cooperation for the benefit of the child.

I think this is generally good, but sometimes I think the judges are stupid and allow visitation (unsupervised) when it is clear that one parent may be a hazard.

Local family court finally recognizes that mom is not always right, and dad's have rights too. Wasn't like that for me. When my ex asked me to take our son because she was working full-time and going to school, I felt like a person again for a little while. But I had to ask the court to suspend the child support payments while he lived with me, otherwise she could have (and would have) expected me to keep paying her even when he lived with me. But she never had to pay me a dime even though she was making more money at the time.

Being recently put into the position of being a single father, I am very thankful that Clark County (Maybe NV as a whole) isn't a "mommy" state. I think I got a pretty even shake in the arrangements. They gave us 50/50, both legal and physical, and let the ex and I sort out the custody schedule. And even now that the ex is trying to pull some crap, the courts seem to not be listening (Not that they ignore her, but she is asking for unreasonable things). I want my daughter to have a mother AND a father. NV agrees, but ex now thinks otherwise.

I'm a little uneasy about having to pay child support, when I am unemployed and she works, but with having my daughter 4 days a week, I'm happy to make that compromise.

If you are a husband/father, in a pending divorce, that is worried about getting a fair shake with the kids, You should feel very lucky to be in Nevada. Across the border to the south, you're only needed for sperm donation, and financial security.

Good post and very true. Having to go to family court hearings periodically with my CASA children, I have to say the judges here are very fair minded when it comes to child custody issues. Mom doesn't always get the kids...
