I'm looking for a studio apartment for my 60-year old mother. She's been living in California, but I just expanded my search to Vegas since rentals there seem to be much less expensive. I see listings for studios there in the $375-450 range, which would be wonderful. However, from my research on Vegas, it seems like there are a lot of areas to avoid for safety reasons. My priorities are:

1) safety (somewhere an older woman would be okay living on her own)

2) inexpensive (I support my mom financially and my budget is currently stretched tight)

Are all these sub-400$ studios near UNLV/airport likely in shady areas, or a scam? Any input would be a huge help, as I'm not familiar with the Vegas area at all!

I don't think they're a scam, but I wouldn't put my mom in a $400 apartment near UNLV/airport.

I would bet though that you can find a better price in Vegas than in California for equal levels of safety and amenities.

Studio apts. next to the Southpoint....$500 a month nice Silverado Ranch location.

Yes, I've definitely found better options in Vegas than California (here $400 would get you... maybe a small bedroom in someone's apartment). Is the entire area around UNLV/airport someplace to avoid, or are there certain blocks that are dangerous and other that are safe?

Do you mean Southpoint casino? (that's what came up when I googled) Or is there an area/neighborhood called Southpoint?

I'm not sure if a $500 place in Vegas would be better than a $600 place here in CA, because after factoring in the cost of air conditioning (which my mom would definitely need in the summer)... the electricity bill might negate the savings from the cheaper location. Sigh.

You didn't mention what part of california you are looking at, but besides the heat in the summer vegas gets cold in the winter too, unlike most of SoCal.

Drat, I didn't know that. How extreme does it get in the winter? I'm near San Diego, so have been looking for places 2-6 hours away... close enough so that I can visit my mom ~bimonthly. The Inland Empire has some cheap but scary cities (according to these forums), like Barstow. Then there are places like Desert Hot Springs or Yuma, Arizona which are also inexpensive but extremely hot. I was hoping Vegas was a bit better. Now I'm stuck!

I believe on the whole, utilities are cheaper in Nevada, even factoring in electricity costs. That's been my experience compared with my relatives in California at least.

You should look into senior communities sometimes they are government subsidized and she would have other people around her the same age.
Those communities are usually gated and everyone tends to check on each other. There is usually a bus service close by if she doesn't drive, or some senior communities have their own transpertaion for the residents. Google senior communities and check into them.

Thank you very much for your suggestions! I hadn't thought to look into senior communities, thinking they would be expensive, but that would be a good solution.

I just came across an ad for a senior apartment in the 89101 zip code , on South Maryland Parkway. Does that seem like a good area?
