What direction do you want your house to face to keep the living areas coolest with the least amount of energy?

East or Northeast.

That way, you only have morning sun hitting the living areas until 1 p.m. or so, and then it's shady for the brutal 2 p.m. to sunset phase of our day.

(All of my living areas face West. This is one area where 89138 has it all over 89110. But 89110 has a better view of the strip because it's a few miles closer.)

From an energy efficiency standpoint, a house butting up against the Spring Mountains, FACING the Spring Mountains would be best. Waste of a view, but efficient.)

My aunt lives in 138, I live in 110. She has a better garden and more pleasant climate. Everyone shows up at my place for New Years and July 4 to watch the fireworks. There's always a trade-off.

I prefer a house that faces west, so the backyard will be shaded in the afternoon.

Good luck,
Croce

You've really no choice here. All homes face the outside.

my house faces east... i couldn't be happier. the south side of the home has no usage on the outside, and the west end, back, is covered by shadows after about 6pm.

I wanted my home to be built on a turntable that would turn it 360 degrees over a 24 hour period but the whole thing with the water and sewer lines just would not work out.

Depends on the location of your community and the location of your home in the community. Where I live, my condo unit faces North, with another condo unit next to it getting the beatdown from the sun shining all afternoon 'till sunset. One other factor to keep in mind is to plant trees around your property. It will definitely help cool the area of your home.

I like the house to face SOUTH so the garage takes a lot of the sun. The patio then faces NORTH which reduces glare and is *cooler*.
