Alright, so I was born and raised in Los Angeles and I still live here. I'm thinking of moving to Vegas in a year or two because I'm so tired of LA. Could anyone who lives in Las Vegas can give me an idea of what it is like to live there? (I'm used to all the traffic, overpriced housing, and heat btw -- I'm a LA native)!

I lasted 3 years in Vegas. Toward the end I was driving to L.A. every weekend. Moving back was like an out of body experience. I'm still glad I did it, it was a trip. I opened the Bellagio, worked in world class fine dining, opened the Paris, survived 114 degree heat...Vegas is a great place for young people who like to party and old people who want to retire. Not the top pick of places to raise a family for a variety of reasons. If you fall into the first catagory, you'll have fun. It's a hard town. Hard. Weaknesses and addictions are magnified. Traffic is bad in L.A. but at least it has some sort of infastructure. The worst road rage I've ever seen was at Trop and Maryland Parkway on a 112 degree day. Still makes me shudder. Vegas has grown very rapidly and didn't plan for it. The neighborhoods all look the same (homes in beige, desert pink or sand). Some people like the fact that most of Vegas was built in the last 10 years, I found it incredibly depressing. I've never seen more smokers or missing teeth than I have in Vegas. Culturally there's not much to do...see some $how$ and a couple museums and that's basically it. I don't drink, I find gambling boring, I don't do drugs and don't go to hoochie bars so I bowled and ate out a lot and went to the movies. Sometimes I'd play video poker for 10 or 15 minutes but didn't see the point. I got one royal flush and bought a computer with it. That can all be accomplished in the same casino

What do I like about Vegas? I'm a vampire and love the fact that it stays open all night. There's also tons and tons of good food. I love the fact that people can go there and be the vulgarians they are deep down. They can drink all they want, gamble away the widow's pension, have a tumble with a $1000 hooker, have the Casino host who got you the hooker score you some blow...there needs to ALWAYS be a place like this and Vegas is it. Props to Vegas. No matter what part of town you're in there's a casino. They even have slot machines in supermarkets and gas stations. Beautiful. Vegas gets some thoroughly decent concerts sometimes and I go see them periodically. I still have dear friends who live there (they all want to escape but haven't made it happen yet). I have one good friend who absolutely loves it and would live nowhere else. God bless him. There are also tons and tons of jobs in Vegas. If you can pass a drug test, you're in. If you can't pass a drug test, there's a place next to Buffalo Exchange on Maryland Parkway that most casino applicants go to before their test (not me!) that sells something semi-magical.
Go out there and decide for yourself. I left because I was homesick for L.A. and Vegas and I are a horrible match. I still love to visit. You may love it there.

Great post! LV is fun and a great place to visit. Some even love to live there. But if you've got children, and they are your top priority, I believe that their interests (and upbringing) would be better served elsewhere. For adults with no kids...there may be no better place to live.

Nonsense. Sorcerer is in that group that lives and loves the strip and environ. There is also the postman, the dentist, the builder, the teacher who live in the outskirts and hit the strip only with visitors. From their perspective Las Vegas is little different from any middle class suburb.
Las Vegas supports both life forms...

I made it for 10 years.
Come and check it out. L.A. isn't going anywhere - you can easily pack it up and go back to L.A. if you don't like it. Like prior a prior poster - I too had the distinct pleasure of opening up one of the mega resort/casinos on the strip - what an experience! I had a blast here as a twenty-something college student. Now as a thirty something - ummmm - personally, I'm looking for something else - but don't get me wrong, Las Vegas is a beauty. She has something for everyone, and I really feel that I made the right decision to move here.

Well, yeah I heard Vegas is hot and has traffic too, but it can't be the exact same thing as LA...

vegas is way hotter...but definately less conjested. i've been snarled in LV (evening and morning rush hour, friday afternoon getting outta town conjestion), but nothing like getting stuck on the 405
. my experiences are more like going through downtown at lunch...it sux, but it is predictable and you learn to avoid it or plan for it.
that being said, i don't live in LV as of yet....

to the OP...have u ever visited vegas? the heat wouldnt be so bad, but it just goes on and on and on. I have only been to la once and that was 25 yrs ago. doesnt it at least cool off there in the evenings with ocean breezes?

usually cools off at night here (LA area)...esp if you are up in the foothills or down at the beach.
