I have always owned Weber grills, charcoal and propane.
When I move to Vegas I will have natural gas (it's a first for me).

Should I purchase a natural gas grill or propane?

It depends on how you primarily use the grill.

If your backyard grill primarily means "steaks," then you're only consideration is BTUs. There is no other criterion. Higher the better. Ideally, you'd want something that gets up above 1,600f. That's hot enough to melt SALT. Real infrared would be the best bet -- not the anemic little metal grates infrared systems sold at the big box stores. Real infrared looks like a white ceramic tile with thousands of little holes in it. Even if you buy the best of the best (google T.E.C.), you might be limited by the size of your gas line. Many (most) people cannot afford this kind of system. But you can get identical results by grilling on top of the chimney starter that most people use to light their Weber kettle grills. Just get the fire in the chimney starter looking like a jet engine, slap a grate on it and sear your steaks right on that.

If the grill primarily means "barbecue" (And by barbecue I mean "low and slow" -- Texas brisket, Carolina pork shoulder, Kansas City ribs, Florida mojo), then get a Big Green Egg, preferably with a BBQ Guru system (so you don't have to check the temperature every 15 minutes) and forget about gas. You can get good results with the Weber kettle as well, but the BGE is better insulated and will cost less in fuel in the long run.

I've had all three and now I have natural gas and I'll never go back. It's awesome. No more messy ash cleanup like charcoal... no more running out of fuel in mid BBQ and running to the corner for more expensive propane. I can grill as much as I want, cheaply and it gets even hotter than my propane grill did.

Default Natural gas grill

I have a three-burner natural gas grill -- Master Forge -- and it's awesome!

That's impossible to answer. There are so many options, it depends on your needs and wants (and budget). Mine was about $300 and included a grill light, side-burner, electric readout, built-in thermometer and 2 cooking levels.

Don't forget that if you really like a particular propane grill, there are conversion kits that allow you to change over a propane grill to run on natural gas. That's what I did... took about 20 minutes... no big deal. Good luck.

Mine is connected to the house via a pre-installed gas pipe with a shut-off valve.

Scoop, thanks for the advice on using the chimney starter to approach the excellence one can get from a real infrared setup. Should I use the times you have provided in earlier posts as if I have the real deal?
