My husband and I will be in Vegas October 9th for about 10 days and we thought, as we have never been to Reno before, that it might be something different.

Any comments on Reno? Didn't realize that it was a 10 hour drive so won't be doing that. Tried to find a cheap bus company but I haven't found any yet. Greyhound is 24 hours (yuk!) and $138.00. Southwest was the cheapest flight I have found and its 102.00. Any thoughts on something other than what I have found?

Thinking of Harrahs because we have free nights in Reno.

Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated.

Reno might be a vacation destination of it's own sometime, especially if you ski; but as a 440 mile side trip? Why? Reno is not in itself an exciting place to be, but it is a nice town to live in. If you go there you'd want time to visit Lake Tahoe, Virginia City, maybe Truckee, CA., and other, mostly outdoor, attractions. The Sierra Nevada's are extremely beautiful mountains, and there are something like 19 ski resorts in the general area of Reno/Carson City/Lake Tahoe/Truckee.The casinos there really aren't much to write home about when compared to the fantastic resorts Las Vegas. Unless you have time to travel when you get there, I'd say it's not worth it at all. Go there on vacation sometime and skip Las Vegas. Northern California has some fantastic wonders worth exploring, and you can base out of Reno for that. Reno has Hot August Nights and the Air Races that are big attractions. The River Walk is nice too.

We like to make a trip to Nevada City, CA, every couple of years; especially for Victorian Christmas. It's about a 2 hour drive from Reno: Nevada City, California

For those not familiar with the local geography you don't go to Reno. Makes a lot more sense to hit LA or San Diego. Or less distance Zion - St George Utah.

Reno is more accessible from San Francisco than from Las Vegas. I still think we should give it to Oregon or California....

Reno is NOT a side trip. That's a whole different trip.

Not only is it far, it's SO not worth it after you've been to Las Vegas. Heck, it's not even worth going to if it was only an hour away. Might as well go to Laughlin.

I can only imagine how much of a let-down Reno would be... especially after going that far. My friend grew up in Reno and still refers to it as "The Biggest Little Mistake In The World"

=================================

First, the $102 fare, is not all that bad.

Personally, I enjoy Reno as much if not more than the Las Vegas. Reno has a lot more outdoor activities and a lot of interesting things to do ... if you have a vehicle. If you have to stay downtown and rely on public transportation, it is not really all that great. If you can jump into the car and see the mountains, see Lake Tahoe, head down to Virginia City, walk along the Truckee and the like, it is really a great place.

Another alternative would be to fly into Reno and take a bus to Lake Tahoe. Lake Tahoe ALSO has a Harrah's casino where you can spend your free nights (possibly). That is a good and quiet time to see Lake Tahoe.
