You guys make pretty impressive TV critics. I thought the show was in a hurry to establish the characters too, so maybe future episodes will be more about police work. When they mispronounced Ely I almost turned it off though. The opening incident at the airport may have been based on the story of his being shot at out there by a stranger. I had the feeling that the younger brother in the show was based on Darwin, who was/is tall and handsome enough to have been in a few movies, such as The Professionals, and The Gauntlet. He was a County Commissioner. I think it was Darwin that owned a car rental agency and wanted in the airport. About that time, for some strange reason, the employees at Avis started getting pulled over a lot out at the airport while delivering cars. They did drive like maniacs so you could never say it was political.

Here's a brief story of Ralph from the RJ's First 100 series. Ralph Lamb - First 100 - Part 3 - ReviewJournal.com

and here's Jane Ann Morrison's column from today's RJ. Ralph Lamb's 'Vegas' doesn't come close to reality TV - News - ReviewJournal.com

No matter what you think of Ralph, he was OUR cowboy sheriff and we were sorry when that flaky vice cop beat him in 1978. Back then many people said he was more powerful than the governor. "Power" has been misused enough that it has been stigmatized. But POWER is really a good thing. Nobody gets anything done without it.

Here's an interesting write up about Floyd Lamb (the older brother who the park at Tule Springs is named for. Barbwire by Barbano: Floyd Lamb embodied 20th Century Nevada

And here's an article about Darwin Lamb: Lambs led charge to Cedar City 30 years ago

To me these guys are the embodiment of Nevada, and I think they were what the Cartwrights would have really been like if they had been real people. But even the Lambs couldn't have ridden a horse from the Ponderosa to Virginia City in 20 minutes - more like a day and a half.

As far as Lamb Boulevard, I've been asking that question since I bought my first house a block from it in 1967. I think someone once told me it was not named for Ralph Lamb's family.

Did anyone else notice that there was no-one smoking in any of the casino scenes!
I think we will give it another try.

Maybe Gillespie will watch it and grow a pair. he can't seem to control his own boys, let alone a motorcycle gang.

I love Dyn's story about the motorcycle gang. I thought it was great that former Governors Miller & Bryan were at the premier with Lamb. Those were the last two good Governors we had, in my opinion.

Ralph would not have lost to the 82nd Airborne like the Chief of POO lice did...cant remember hs name, he became the
Undersheriff when they consolidated.....BUT...

We had the FIRST RED FLAG joint Army Airforce operations here in about 1963....The Army from Palm springs, the AF from Nellis and from Phoenix and the 82nd Airborne from....GA I think....

They gave the 82nd a weekend pass and the boys headed to Fremont Street....they hooted n hollered and chased all the hookers, then they got serious.....and turned a City PO lice car upside down on first Street between Binions n whatever that little joint was next to it....

the PO lice didn't like it one bit so they started chasin about 10 Jeeps fulla Airborn back to their Bivowack area in the Desert across from Nellis....they got to the gate and the MP's said ....Nope.

The called their Commander outta bed to the gate and the Commander said NOPE.

SO they brought out the Chief of PO lice....Company commander relented under the full force of Las Vegas's finest....Said "Sure come on in n look around "

about 150 82nd Airborne guys jacked shells into the chamber of their M1 Carbines.....Chief a PO lice said.....NOPE.....mistaken identity.....

Would have been a differant outcome with Ralph there.

I think "Longmire" is better than "Vegas", at least so far, and she is one reason why. Both filmed in Las Vegas, New Mexico I believe. Although I think I saw some Hollywood neighborhoods on Vegas. As far as a police babe, it would have been a police chippy in those days, but they didn't have any women on the force. At least not in the field. I had thought about being a deputy when I moved here, but they had height and weight regs back then that I couldn't meet. You had to be BIG; at least big enough to take on several guys with pool cues in the bars. And on the Strip, you had to be big enough to deal with drunken tourists without anyone actually getting hurt. You wanted them to keep coming back. It was years later before they put women ossifers in the field.

BTW: I think I heard someone on Vegas use the term "chippy". Their problem is they aren't consistent with period customs and terms, and it's obvious they don't understand them.

Dynimagelv, the first time I ever saw Mayor Gragson was in about 1965 or so. I had been in Jaycees back home, and transferred here. The first meeting I went to they had him as a speaker. He talked about how his family and friends didn't want him to run because of his speech handicap, but he said he decided he'd use it to his advantage, and it helped him get elected. I thought he was a nice man, and a good mayor for Las Vegas. You'd see him out somewhere and he treated you like an old friend. He and my old friend and co-worker, Hal Morelli, who became a City Commissioner, got into political hot water when they opposed the Meadows Mall location because it would create too much traffic around a school. There was an attempt to recall them both; obviously it was because somebody stood to make a lot of money on that project. I've often wondered if they put the Expressway between the mall and the school on Bonanza and Valley View as a way to appease their opposition. Then they named it the Oran Gragson Expressway.
