So, after filling out an on-line application, I get invited to a group interview at the Wynn. This is for Security Officer positions.

I shown up early so they throw me into the previous hour time slot. There must've been 30 of us maybe more.
We are seated in a room with a panel of hiring personnel. We are asked to volunteer to stand up and introduce ourselves then relate a customer service story or they will call names to stand up.
i volunteer with about half of the group..they ask for more volunteers after we finish, threaten to pick people, a few more volunteer then the panel says short break then continue.
They leave for 3-5 minutes, 1 returns and announces that the following people should follow her after all names are called. She proceeds to call names...surely enough, it's those of us that volunteered to stand and speak.
We are led down a hallway, stopped then told those that were still in the room had been chosen to progress in the interview process, we were welcome to apply in future, thanks for coming, good bye! Boom! gone!

We were speechless, walked out and began talking outside...we had all noted that we were all the volunteers. There might have been a couple either way as not all stayed to talk, but by and large our commonality was volunteering!

Anyone have any insight as to their method or was this a huge coincidence? They weren't gone long enough to go over any of our applications and if we were pre-eliminated, why even invite us in the first place?

It seems strongly that we were deselected based on the volunteering to speak.

You would think that as a security person they would prefer those that weren't timid or public address shy!

Unfortunately I paid no attention to those not called to see if there was some commonality amongst them....I had assumed incorrectly that they weren't called because they were timid.

I wonder if they got the lists mixed up. Either that or the person in charge of the process has a silly outlook that I encountered in the military about a negative opinion about those who volunteer. Sorry to hear about that!

Hmmmm.... sounds like a weird psychological profile. Anvilpw may be on to something. (I'm married to a clinical psychologist, so this interests me.) Let me take a guess as to what happened.

Those who are willing to share personal stories about themselves to a group of strangers might be considered more personable/social and potentially "leaders" because they are not afraid of public speaking. Perhaps the casino does not want a person who thinks for himself and may act against the wishes of casino management? Maybe they want quiet, awkward, misfits who simply follow policy unquestioningly and don't want to stand out.

Or perhaps the stories you all told we ones that shed a positive light on yourselves and they interpreted that as self-serving and less "team" oriented? Hard to see what they are thinking, but this is interesting nonetheless.

....or maybe I'm just reading too much into it.

Maybe it was the type of customer service story you related. Was your story positive or negative? Maybe they do not want people who are outspoken?

Regardless, group interviews are pretty rude and if this is the way they treat potential employees, that says a lot about the corporation. Some HR idiot probably read some book that told them to do it this way.

I wonder how many of the people who did not speak up were there on the second time around?

Well at least you know that if it happens again, do not volunteer!

Perhaps they feel if you were willing to "talk", you may talk about something you shouldn't....who knows?

Maybe they pegged you for an extrovert when they are looking for introverts?

This. The company's looking for introverts. That's the only thing that the groups have in common.

Ive read a lot about introverted leaders, but never employees.

They are probably looking for submissive, rule-following, people. My DH worked there when they opened. Elaine W. literally expected the waiters to do a military formal turn when rounding corners.
He just never showed up again after the first week.
