Hello All,
I am a family physician working in rural Kansas and am considering a move to Las Vegas. I grew up in Nebraska, went to medical school in Des Moines, IA, and residency in Kansas (my wife is from Kansas). My wife and I are tired of the brutal Midwest winters. We have no children so schools aren't of high importance for us. However, standard of living is as well as safety. We have been to Las Vegas a lot but have never spent prolonged periods of time there. It seems there is such a vast difference of opinion about the city. I would like to hear from some of the locals about your city.
Being a visitor I have noticed some of the gripes about it (too many nutty drivers, etc.) But, I figure there will be those problems in ANY city.

Thank You for any help.

The VA hospital is BEGGING for doctors. We live in Centennial Hills and have always felt safe. There really are some nice areas here, Denise

Hi Dr. Chuck,
Are you looking to start your own practice or join an existing one? The location of your practice would influence the area in which you want to live.

In terms of general questions, Vegas is crazy hot in the summer, and pretty mild in the winter. The drivers are insane. For cultural offerings, hit this thread http://www.city-data.com/forum/las-v...al-events.html

We have crime, like any other city, but LV is pretty safe generally.

Keep in mind that medical reimbursements in the valley are generally based on a percentage below the Medicare allowable, so plan accordingly.

Since you posted the same question on the Nevada forum, have you read those suggestions?

Where in Kansas? I grew up in Far North part of West Texas (about 60 miles from Kansas) where the wind blows 30 MPH every day, no trees, blowing dirt etc and can say I don't miss it one bit (other than my family still lives there).

I've only been here about 1.5 months and I find the drivers aren't any more crazy than Salt Lake, St. Louis or Tulsa if that helps.

It is a nice neat place to be a Physician. It has lots or opportunity to practice virtually any style of medicine.

As a place to live it is standard southwestern. Hot climate somewhat offset by dry. The suburbs of Las Vegas are virtually interchangeable with those of Phoenix or Los Angeles though a lot less expensive than LA.

It is very much a suburban place. It simply lacks the urban part of any midwest or eastern city. The Strip is our steel mill. People work there but otherwise use it only rarely for entertainment.

The suburban areas are about as safe as any suburban area of a major city can be. Henderson, which is one of the component cities, shows crime rates around the top five for cities of 100,000 or more. Many other areas are similar but not as easily viewed separately as is Henderson.

Try it before you buy it. Visiting the strip and living here are different things. Come and stay out in the burbs and see how it feels.
