If the county REALLY wanted to crack down on this, it could be done easily and automatically. Require each cab to have a GPS data logger tied to the meter. Each trip would be recorded. The logger would be downloaded periodically (daily, weekly, the more frequent the better.) The logs would go into a central computer somewhere, which would analyze the pick-up points, destinations and routes. The long-hauls would be pretty obvious. The offending drivers would be hauled in and made to explain what they were doing. If they can't they get fined, suspended or both. I'd also ding the cab company that employs the driver.

But then again, does the county REALLY care?

that would assume that the Taxicab companies have NO political clout.......

Look around at ground transportation and tell me what ya think......EVEN the competition [shuttle busses etc] are owned ny the cab companies......I would LOVE to see it happen but it ain't gonna......the tourista is the one that has to pay attention, unfortunately

I came back to LV from NJ the first time, about 3 months after leaving my cab driver job....grabbed a cab t the cabstand at McCarran [long before the tunnel .....driver [Desert Cab] Told the driver Golden nugget.....driver turned onto Paradise.....down to Trop......RIGHT on TROPICANA [I decided to keep my mouth shut] down Trop to Boulder Highway....mouth still shut....boulder highway allllllllll the way up to charleston.......right on Casino center and down to the Nugget.......mouth still shut.......got to the nugget, Driver says that'll be $47.55 [ straightline fare was around $6.95]

I handed him a 5 and two ones and said the one thing that cab drivers HATE to hear "Keep the change Cabbie" He started screamin and ranting and raving about the fair and how he was gonna call the cops.....

i said : I suggest that you call the TA and ask for Officer XXXXXX he LOVES to bust long routers.....and i walked away ......

The legal requirement is asking which path and also telling that it WILL cost more.
If the fare chooses the most expensive then fine....all is legal.

FWIW the strip is not the longhaul...the highway is!

Not even cabbies want to take the strip.with all the sitting at stoplights they lose more in tip and opportunity than the extra few cents it adds to the meter.

Taxi rates are 20 cents per 1/13 of a mile or $2.60 per mile. Sitting rate is $30 per hour or fifty cents per minute.

The biggest longhaul is to go to the airport via the highway. The biggest waste of time for all is the strip. The best view of the strip is walking or the open top bus .

I don't factually know but would venture a guess that the political clout of the LV cab industry is a huge part of why the monorail doesn't go to McCarran. I'd further guess that political clout will prevent the TA from making any serious effort at curbing long hauling anytime soon. TA will always make a little effort just for show, but that's about it.

If you follow the history and the nature of this development it is reasonably clear why it did not go to the airport. No one involved had the least interest in going there. If it had been a government activity it likely would have come out a lot different. But in NV we are very resistant to paying for such things...even if they pay off for us in the end.

See the UNLV stadium. That has to be a real winner tied to the strip and all. But it could well lose in NV based on who pays for it.

We do not seem able to understand that the strip is our steel mill and deserves the same sort of support other places give to their primary industry.

WELL....what a timely thread! StaggerLee must have cast some bad juju on this thread!

I turn my cab in this afternoon and find I have a warning letter for low booking!

So.... here are my ride counts versus shift average ride counts:

ME AVERAGE

18 18.2
13 14.4*
18 17.6
11 11.5
21 19
20 13.9
15 15.8
16 18.3*

So only two of them show that my rides were low...okay, I'll take that, but the company expects three low days each month so two doesn't qualify for a warning letter.

Now out of 24 days worked 18 of my days had a higher than average number of rides or 3/4 of the time.

Yet because the dollar amount was low they want to discipline.

Now, if you have the average number of rides OR MORE but the dollar amount is lower than average that means you had short rides.
There are only two ways a cabbie can make the dollar amounts better....refuse short rides=illegal or taking a longer route=also illegal.

BTW the TA said they can't micromanage the companies! ...but to send them the documentation and they'll take a look at it.

I'm livid right now!

If they REALLY wanted to stop longhauling they would make the ticket for the DRIVER $300 and the company $3,000!

A few tickets like that and the companies will make it stop! As it is the companies are not penalized at all for their drivers longhauling.
