I'm sure you dialed 311. If you did, it usually never warrants a quick response.

I dialed 911 once. A person I knew was dangerously drunk got behind the wheel to drive home despite my protests. The operator transferred me to the non- emergency line where I was politely informed that they did not have the resources to go after every drunk driver. Mercifully, this person did not kill anyone that night.

If a person working on their fourth DUI, including one with an accident doesn't elicit a response, a couple of stoner neighbors working a joint on their own property is highly unlikely to bring out the police.

I think Fremont is a victim of its own success at this point. They'll figure it out. Last time I was down there, there were plenty of visible police vehicles just East of the FSE canopy, but I did not see any officers actively walking through the crowds. Maybe that's all it would take.

If New Orleans can figure out how to handle Mardi Gras, surely we can figure out how to handle down town. At least I hope so.

On my last visit a few months ago while playing a machine in the Four Queens, a skank with a messed up grill approached me asking for money. She had just been sprung from the Big House. I sent her away. It has been getting a bit sketchy downtown.

An idea for a good thread,

"Last time I called the police, the response was..."

Between Metro, the FSE security, and the security people from the surrounding casinos, there's no reason this area should not be much more than adequately patrolled.

Also, I see no reason not to put a under 21 you exclusion for the entire FSE and some of the surrounding blocks, if not with a parent.

I avoid going to the bars and lounges on First Friday due to how packed they get, but on other days I like going to The Griffin (probably my favorite bar in the city,) and Insert Coins.

The area has experienced a revitalization when you compare it to a decade or so ago. Yes, there is still a lot of work that needs to be done, but it's no longer an area where I would, say, be concerned about taking a date to.
Im very excited about how East district is turning out. Not surprisingly, with revitalization comes more curious people, and that brings more ruckus. I am going to First Friday this week, and I have a feeling its going to be insane down there.

Interesting how I have never had any of those bad experiences a lot of you have. I don't live there but I have spent a good deal of time on Fremont in the last year and a half or so, a lot of that time I was even there alone. I've never been harassed, hassled, offered drugs, etc. I am sure it goes on, but I've never witnessed it.

I do think the huge free concerts are getting to be a bit much, though. Trying to cram SO MANY people in such a small space is NEVER a good idea. Especially when it is hot.

Regardless, Fremont Street is one of my favorite places ever.

What time of the day are you usually there? According to metro, the "action" happens after late nights to early morning. FF results in so many arrests that there are too many links to posts. They range from prostitution, gun shots, underaged drinking, drug selling, fighting, gang activity and robbery.

Maybe when I get to a computer, I will post them all.

Agree about the concerts.. why they use the middle stage, I will never know. It would be so much better if they used the end stage outside Golden Gate and have the crowd DOWN Fremont, not ACROSS Fremont. I love the bands they have there for Rock of Vegas, but I refuse to deal with that many people crammed inside gates.
