Personal favorites of mine:

Baja Fairy Duster
Wooly Butterfly Bush
Spanish Dagger/Bayonet
Joshua Tree (obviously)
Shoestring Acacia
Blue ghost Eucalyptus

Favorite site of mine: http://www.horticultureunlimited.com...nts/guide.html

Be careful at Star Nursery, they have a lot of plants and shrubs that will die so fast out here unless you are landscaping one of those grass sprinkler system ecosystems in your backyard. :P

^^^ There is a reason why tags/labels come with the plant when you purchase it. Follow the tag and you will have a very high success rate in your garden.

UNLV has Shoestring Acacia on its premises, it has very long seed pods hanging from it. I like the regular Acacia tree with its sweet smelling yellow flowers especially during Spring. I have Acacia shrubs at home, they grow fast and it also has the same sweet smelling yellow flowers during Spring.

we had a shoe string when we first moved in... unfortunately it blew over the first year and I replaced it with a mallee eucalyptus... it does great here.

I have heard that about the Acacias (willow and shoestring). We planted both and have them tied down, hopefully they stay put! Eucalyptus are supposed to be very good in the wind, good choice!

The native shrub with orange flowers in the Spring is a Globe Mallow (Sphaeralcea ambigua). I have seen it at Star Nursery. You can also grow it from seeds but they will germinate on their own schedule. Make sure you do not plant them too deep. Just scratch the ground, spread some seeds, and tap the soil flat. Some of them should grow. Globemallow reseeds itself and you will have many volunteers once you have a mature bush.
The size of your second bush may have to do with the age of the plant and how much water it receives. It will probably get bigger.

I want to thank La Spider again.... because of you, I was able to actually ask for the plants at plant world... Viola, I now have everything I was looking for.

I will try to make it harder for you next time.

I am looking for a jashua tree also.

Joshua trees are pricey but it's a fun place to visit too!
