Not to sound off topic, but I've been all around MGM in the night time. Even Koval St. I've been all around the strip. I have never really felt that unsafe on the strip. I've felt uncomfortable, mostly by the guys taking turns making inappropriate comments at me, but never too unsafe. But it might have been because I've spent years in a pretty dangerous area in Philadelphia, where walking out at night was a death wish (yeah, we moved for a reason lol). Yeah there are some pretty "ghetto" people on the strip, but a lot of them are drunken fools, nothing but big talk and wannabe "swag."

In any case, if you DO happen to move here, you'll find that locals barely go on the strip, except those who frequent clubs or work on the strip. Otherwise, there's tons of things to do. What you ask? Well, when you move here, you'll probably do what you usually do in your old city. Shopping, movies, eating out, going to the park, mountains, hiking, rock climbing, gym.

We caught the Boulder Highway bus outside The closed down Western Casino last trip in April. You are right von, some odd characters in that area!!

If you don't want to go to the "ghetto", then don't. This city is huge. Go somewhere else where you feel more comfortable!
I've been out and about near El Cortez well after midnight alone. I never felt threatened in any way. It's not someplace I want to hang out regularly, of course, but you won't die if you leave the canopied area of FSE.

Ever been to the Atomic bar? That seems to be the extent of how far east most people will go.

If it's not some place I want to hang out regularly, I don't go. I'm aware that I won't die if I leave the FSE, but it is not enjoyable to me to be in that environment, so I don't go very often, unless there is a definite purpose. When there are so many nice areas in town, why would I want to hang out in the sh***y ones?

It is well worth the "risk" to eat at Le Thai!

No it is not getting worse. In some areas it is clearly getting better. But there is no gentrification going on in neighborhoods near the strip. Some heavy duty gentrification downtown but not off strip.

So a few blocks off. Particular east and things are pretty raunchy. Not new though. Was far worse ten years ago.

I think you have simply discovered things new to you. But they have been that way a long time. The strip remains very safe even though you run into the CA gang bangers out for the weekend. Try a big fight or the basketball tourneys if you really want a thrill.

I love how, when something isn't kosher in Vegas, the default blame always goes to California this or California that...

What about that poor California Highway Patrolman who was just killed during a car-jacking by a Vegas local last weekend? Oh, I get it...the Vegas local who did that lived in California for two years... 20 years ago, so it's California's fault again...ho hum!

Is it above any of you to ever admit that many of Vegas' problems might be of its own creation?

I, as a Californian, love your town and love to come over and visit, and if it weren't for people like myself and that poor Highway Patrolman, you'd look like Searchlight or Laughlin!

I honestly can't tell the difference between a Californian or a Vegas local.

...just showed one of my co-workers this thread. He laughed at the Cali comments. He is at the crossroads since he has been stationed here 12 years and is originally from Cali.

Does that make him a Vegas local?
