They jack of room rates because they know the cowboys aren't high rollers who gamble a lot.

I honestly have no idea of the exact dollar amount...but when he says, "it's costing me about 300 bucks a night to park my rig over there" , I tend to believe him...he isn't the "joshin" type. I do know for a fact that his business expenses alone, for the 2012, 10 day "go around" ran real close to 23k.....and while he was here....dropped another 50k for a new truck....talk about "trickle down" economics...

What many people don't realize is that this is not a 10 day vacation....this is business...big business. Many of these guys are "self sponsored" professional athletes. One bad ride, and your career, is dramatically shortened and in some case, over !

Bionic knees and shoulders are not cheap....and if you stick with it long enough...you might just "win" one...or two.

The road to the NFR is long...lonely, and often times...expensive....!

You will never hear them complain.....it's just the cost of "doin business".

I don't understand what some of you are talking about/
My wife is dealer in downtown casino,my both sisters are dealers too and this period of rodeo is best period of the year.
Cowboys gamble and leave the tip. Ask anyone who works in any casino (waitress, dealer, housekeeping) in downtown about them and everyone will tell you same things.
I don't understand some people saying cowboys don't gamble or don't leave tip!
Having 220$ tip a day during rodeo instead 70-80$ during "normal" days is big difference.
And any restaurant worker I spoke during this period was happy about it.
So if you people work in the office or non customer related jobs with no tips I understand your frustration but please don't say we don't need rodeo or people who come here for that.
Don't be jealous because someone is making more money during this period then you

The ENTIRE time that the NFR was in Las Vegas, I was being offered deals for rooms by Harrah's and related properties for $50-75. If you were paying much more than that, it is only because you were staying at the rodeo hotels.

Convention rates are quite often a lot higher than market rates.

Decent weather is "accommodating" to the spectator...an added benefit, per se ! However, with that said...the type of clientele this event attracts will be there...rain or shine. Many have a "vested" interest.

You are correct...Vegas is not a hard sell in December if you are seeking a "cheap" vacation ...but those kind of visitors don't exactly pay the light bill !

An example...I have a friend who attends every year...stays at Orleans and pays about 300 a night...that same room...extract the rodeo...maybe 100...even at a 100....that doesn't equate to the "budget" minded.

Check out the prices at Cowboy Christmas....that is not exactly a cheap venue....and most of the "buyers" are not locals....ask any vendor.

The NFR brings or brought many millions into this city...it's gonna be very hard to match...

For the competitor.....it's 6's....Texas and Oklahoma are much more convenient...but windshield time ain't nothing new !
My relative stayed at Orleans 3 days during rodeo and paid 127 a night. Paying 300$ is not possible. She could pay that much @ Venetian or Palazzo

The Mandalay Bay, which was one of the hotbeds, was $70. The non-gaming revenue was something like $90mil--- over 12 days--- $7.5 mil/day isn't squat.

As I said earlier -- if it weren't for rodeo business in December, we wouldn't have much business at all. They aren't exactly my favorite crowd*, but they're consistent and reliable.

* Rodeo is only one step removed from the Roman games at the Colosseum, and little better than bull fighting. I don't see the point of it all. Any sport that requires repeatedly whacking animals in the testes with high voltage simply isn't my kind of sport.

This is true, but LV could bring in ANY group for the same time slot, and spending would increase.
