My friends and I went to Apex, tonight. While we were on I15 we saw so many cops just sitting on the side of the road. There were some cars that were pulled over by undercover cops in white suburbans and highway patrol. But they were mostly on the shoulder waiting for something to happen. We passed at least 8 cops on the shoulder. Did something major happen or is that just how it's always is. I don't go pass the towards the speedway too often so I don't really know if it's normal to see that many cops in one night.

Maybe a random thing; I do know that I15 southbound and northbound around the Spaghetti bowl up until Sahara is a hot bed for accidents; probably at least one a day. Maybe they're trying to deter accidents and catch law breakers.

A better question is why so many on U.S. 95 between Mercury and Fallon? You actually see more NHP on the back roads of Nevada than you do regular cars. It goes all the way back to about 1974 when Tricky Dicky Nixon imposed the 55 MPH speed limit during his fake energy "crisis", then forced states to add more highway patrol to hand out tickets for wasting energy. When that rule died by it's own terms, we tried to go back to no speed limit in Nevada, and some other western states. But, the Feds made us keep hiring cops and impose a speed limit by withholding highway funds ...a small percentage of our own money that they stole from us in the first place. So if it wasn't for the Feds telling us what to do we could probably get by with a third of the NHPs... or less.

I went to the River Run in Laughlin this past Thu-Sun. I counted 12 NHP on 95 between Henderson and Searchlight, then another 4 between Searchlight and Cal-Nev-Ari, and what seemed like the rest of the force in Laughlin. Searchlight (as always) had multiple vehicles pulled over. That 25 MPH revenue-builder was working overtime, that's for sure. Fortunately, in Laughlin, the crowd was, for the most part, calm. There didn't seem to be any fracas that I saw, anyway.

I see two problems here.

First is the new law that says you need to get over a lane or slow way down if you see an NHP car on the side of the road. No difference if the car's lights are on or off. So, given that many people don't know about this law, the NHP sits on the side of the road and catches people who don't get over.

Second is the above mentioned 25mph zones. Not a problem between here and Apex, but definitely a thing to watch on 95, either north or south.

I would say, in their defense, the roads travelled to and from Las Vegas and the lakes, either Mead or Mojave, do see more than their share of drunk drivers on the weekends.

Does the NHP participate in the speed trappery of the 25MPH zones, or is it just the local cops?

The ones I saw in Searchlight and Cal-Nev-Ari were NHP. Laughlin had a mixture. We did the side-trip to Oatman, and they were all Mojave County Sheriff.

I do the trip up to Hawthorne on 95 fairly frequently. Both NHP and County are involved in speed enforcement. However, I usually see the NHP outside the city limits. It's easy for them to catch people doing 90-100 in the 70 zones. Two particularly favorite spots for them to hang out is around Beatty and between Goldfield and Tonopah.
