Long Beach will be in serious trouble when the widened panama canal opens. Many jobs will be lost and companies will close.

LV is one of the best bicycling cities. In the 110 heat, it is not bad once you start sweating and the evaporative effect takes place.

Is the Northeast side of Vegas a good area to live? I would like to bike to and from my job site
I'd pick Vegas because it gives you the most potential growth for your job. As far as continuing your education with a masters, that could be done online with occasional trips to a main campus. There is a lot to do here in respect to your interests. Us Nevadans do reverse tourism to California and with your salary, you could afford to fly to Long Beach for your beach fix or drive with your age and energy.

As far as living close to your job. I'd get as close as reasonably possible with safety concerns. Ive commuted up to an hour a day in other states for my job. In Las Vegas my job is 12 minutes away and there is no way to quantify the money, family, environmental or health benefits of NOT being subjected to the factors of road traffic everyday. I'm loving it.

I've spent a good amount of time in Tucson, AZ and I suspect I will be just fine with the heat.

I love biking and would prefer to commute by bike to work, which is why I was asking about how the northeast part of Vegas is (crime wise and demographic wise). Where do the younger crowds live in Vegas, btw?

Idk if I'd want to bike to work in any area as there are no "safe" areas for that. Unless you'd be leaving at 4 o'clock in the morning and returning after 6ish. There's too much going on on the roads.

The only considerably "worth it" commute i've seen are military people who bike across West Tropical Pkwy to get to the base. But that's in my neck of the woods in the often villainized North Las Vegas.

As far as where young professionals live, I have no idea. I'd assume all over. LV is a young city that has not been gentrified by race or class yet. That's a whole another thread. You could be a physician living next to an escort next to a retiree next to a drug dealer - in any part of the city.

I believe one of those pimps involved in that infamous strip crash inferno lived in one of the better Summerlin communities.

If the LV job is better, I'd go for that, from LV, it would be easy to look for a job in metro LA if you wanted to switch.

Socially, Long Beach would probably be better.

40K is pretty good money here. Close to starvation wages in Cali. And don't forget the difference in taxes you will pay. If the Vegas job has more possibilities too, I would pick Vegas.

I don't know about that. For 20 some years, that I lived in Orange County, I worked in warehousing, made between $9.50 and $11.00 per hour and done ok. That thru the 80's and 90's. Had an old Dodge truck for awhile, then a Datsun King Cab and later '76 Kawasaki 650 motorcycle. That bike was my only transportation for over a year. And, I lived in a furnished room that I rented in a house. Man, if I was making 40k per year then, I could have REALLY been living the "good life". LOL

When I first moved to Las Vegas, I visited my buddy alot who lived right on the beach in Huntington Beach, CA, which is about 30 min from Long Beach. I was in love and thought I was going to move there. But after the honeymoon wore off, it kind of got boring because there wasnt that much to do. And you REALLY start to notice how fake a lot of people are there. Not everyone, because there are some really cool people out there. But it wears on you. Thats my personal take on it. The difference in cost of living was part of the reason too.
