Lots of great suggestions here for day trips.
What are some of your favorite overnight or 2 day trips?

If you book in advance you can take advantage of SW Airline's $59/$69 one way fares to San Diego, San Francisco, L.A.!

Being I loathe driving a car when I'm out of town, in all 3 of those cities you really don't need a car to get around.

I've done it: Fly to L.A., taking the earliest flight of the day, get a $6 all-day Tap Card at the Aviation train stop near LAX, ride the light rail into downtown L.A. or Long Beach for the day, have a great lunch in Chinatown or the Central Market, do some shopping/sightseeing, and take the train back to LAX for their last flight out to Las Vegas! Nice cheap day trip, no motel expense either!

Also for a day trip, you can also fly into Burbank Airport, take the commuter train to downtown L.A. as well!

How about going up to Zion in Utah (couple of hours to drive). Then you can hike and camp out near the Zion River for a few bucks. I advise bringing your own booze from Vegas (higher alcohol content, less hassle) then you can hike the next day and come back to Vegas!

Either that or go to Laughlin for a cheap getaway on the Colorado River

Spring time, when the Sierra Mountains are caked with snow: Bishop, Lone Pine, Big Pine, Mammoth, Convict Lake, and all those 2-lane roads heading west up into the mountains!

Haven't done Tioga Pass road yet, it's always been closed down yet when I've been there. That's for summer time!

Returning, don't miss that little treasure of a town, Benton, near the NV border, with Boundary Peak, 13,143 feet, highest mountain in NV, looming over the city. The approach from the west downhill to Benton is absolutely awesome! It'll take your breath away!

If you look out your rear view mirrors, en route back to NV, in Spring, you can see some of the snow-capped Sierra Mountains all the way into Nevada!
