95% of the people move to Vegas to make a buck or save a buck, just the way it is.

Then destroying views of the beautiful scenery here should not be an issue. Once the buck is earned and probably squandered, the scenery is gone. That is just special. And no one should care because 95% of everyone here made their buck. Full circle.

And if a buck can't be earned without destroying our surroundings, that is also special.

The architects failed.

The really good examples of "downtown" build-out in a suburb would be Santana Row in San Jose or Assembly Row in Massachusetts.

Santana Row
Shopping & Restaurants in Somerville, MA | Assembly Row
I'm from San Jose and Santana Row is actually not in downtown San Jose but a few miles away. It is very congested there because there is also a large mall across the street. Parking is a nightmare and the parking garage is also horrible.

Well then we better just stop building everywhere and start living in places without light. The surroundings aren't destroyed, this was just overblown "oh it doesn't look as good as it did before at night because I get a faint bit of light from 5 miles away" comment. If that's destroying things we're screwed.

It's not even the right comparison, to compare Downtown Summerlin to Santana Row. Santana Row is much more like Tivoli Village than Downtown Summerlin. Santana Row has no anchor department stores, and is mostly upscale dining and boutiquey shopping, and the place for those with a lot of disposable income to be seen on evenings and weekends. That sounds like Tivoli Village to me.

Santana Row also isn't in a suburb. It's in a somewhat sketchy neighborhood three miles west of downtown SJ, at the intersection of two major freeways and the across the street from the largest, nicest indoor mall in the area.

Just from the list of tenants, Downtown Summerlin sounds more like The Grove in LA than Santana Row.

I hope Summerlinites love the increased traffic and congestion.
I always avoided Summerlin before new "downtown"

I am implying about the downtown feel if they want to call it a downtown.

To me, it just seems like another shopping plaza. Downtown Summerlin is totally misleading.

I'm saying before it should have been designed like Santana Row. What they have now is just another strip plaza.

Downtown Summerlin name does not fit the build-out.

Until there's something other than shopping (like significant non-retail commericial/office, and integrated residential), I agree with this. It's just another shopping mall.

One thing that I do like is that Pavilion Center now continues from Charleston to Sahara. I hate getting onto the 215 from Charleston because it does get congested at the lights over 215. Sahara is a much better ramp but this might change with the increased traffic. I guess we will see how bad the traffic will get (i'm sure the first few months will be bad) until the excitement fades away. For me its pretty cool that I can now actually just walk to the Mall and not get into my car and drive to either the Strip area or Meadows.
