speaking as someone who has attended conferences in both cities, i can say i would rather come to LV (not just 'cause i like LV, but from dealing w/ hassles in both other cities). the convention center in orlando is kinda far from anything fun to do w/o a car and chicago lacks the weather and forces you to deal w/ downtown chi-town pricing.

Comdex left when THEY decided that they were so successful they could make MORE if they had MORE conventions around the country.....they soon found that MOST of the people came because they could come to vegas as a tax write-off and that WE had the best room deals.....

and YES the room rates are elevated for Comdex and for CES.....because....THEY DON'T GAMBLE and that what this towns about......
This town is about gambling? You are reputed hotel management downtown, and thus can't be expected to be informed on gambling matters, since the first megaresort was built on LVBS other departments out-earned gambling. LV is about price-gouging----Indian casinos are about GAMBLING. The $7.7 billion won by Ca casinos alone surpassed the "strip", and coupled with low overhead INDIAN casinos are about GAMBLING----have another 99cent shrimp cocktail.

Seems like every tourist spot i've been. Orlando, Hawaii..etc.. they seemed to price gouge. What i don't get is why people in CA still come here to gamble if there are so many joints in their own backyards?

While there are no absolute figures--it has been my experience the majority of Ca and Arizona come for the total experience, clubs, food, partying, and sure gambling--but not for gambling alone. The sane ones I have talked to don't gamble in Ca, as it is too convienent, and don't want to become problem gamblers. Last year LVCVA authority reported the #1 reason visitor activity in LV was sightseeing. I'm too lazy to provide a link, but it's out there.

I use to live by a Casino in San Pablo, CA. The majority of the gamblers were asians and old folks (usually because of bingo). Other than that, the only people I knew that gambled were the ones who would bet on sports and would have to make trips to Reno for that (dont ask me why?)

Sports betting is really the only form of gambling not available in other areas, except horses in some areas. All that many need is ANY excuse to come to NV. A four hour drive is completely acceptable for a day of total degenerate behaviour. Isn't San Pablo limited to poker? I think most states agree sports betting would open Pandora's box, and regulating fixes, point shaving, etc would simply not be worth the effort. By the way, I now hear Reno is preparing to establish itself as a "family" destination.

I really never went inside the casino there in San Pablo, but you can see the parkling lot from my window. It was all asian and old people. Not sure what kind of gaming they had in there, but i asumed bingo because of the old folks.

Which contradicts your entire point that Vegas' future is in joepardy. Simply put, conventioners and tourists alike have an uncanny attraction to Vegas, which is why the city continues to grow, despite being what some bitter people call a cesspool.
