Hey everyone,

Love to learn what kind of job everyone has down there. I know a lot of it is entertainment base, I would be interested in hearing what people are doing to pay the bills.

When I move down, hoping to get into some kind of marketing or advertising manager position myself, but pretty open to almost anyhting.

Read somewhere the other day that 43% of the Las Vegas workforce is in the tourism industry. Some of the mega resorts on the strip can employ upwards of 10,000 people. Each one has security, casino workers, food services, valet, housekeeping, nightclub staff... Then there is also typically some kind of live theater aspect in each resort as well (cirque du soleil being the most prominent) which alone is hundreds of employees.
The bulk of the other jobs are eaten up by CCSD (Clark County School District) and medical workers.

Wow that's quite a bit!

Pretty cool. Alaska is similar in a sense. Most of our jobs are in oil, mining or fishing, but tourism is a huge aspect too.

Our workforce was once half casino workers/construction/military, and half "everybody else." During the recession, we lost most of our construction workers.

The one-two punch of the recession was: No more construction workers spending most of their paycheck locally every week; and tourists didn't have any money to urinate away at casinos. Construction is limping back to life. And that's great. Guest spending is also up. That's great, too.

Las Vegas is a fairly typical city. It's just that our major industry is "relieving the rest of the world of its spare cash." That means we're the first to feel the effects of a recession and the last to recover.

Other than posting generalized stats, the membership of this board is not representative of LV's population. The demographic is atypical.

We're much more like Phoenix than we are like Manhattan. We're a fairly typical city, seriously. There's nothing special about this town.

I agree with Scoop on this one with the following exceptions - the 15 corridor, slot machines in CVS, and being able to grab a bite to eat, buy tires, or grab a bottle of whiskey at 4:00a. We have more amenities than a typical southwest city, but most neighborhoods are typical of any other city in this region.

LV is entirely unique. The only city we come remotely close to is Orlando.
