Can anyone tell me about zip code 89108? There are numerous condo's along Rancho Charleston that look pretty good. But I know that area can be iffy in some parts. Any help appreciated.

I was about to tell you about the 89108 area when I saw you mentioned condos in the Rancho Charleston area and that isn't in 89108 that I know of.

That area you're asking about for the condos is right by University Medical Center in the 89102 and 89106 zipcode. I only know of a handful of places around that area that people live like the Mayan Plaza Apartments, Town Villas and Wyandotte Apartments.

It's kind of a central point. On Charleston in that area West there are two Walmarts. One is a Market and the other is a Super Center. There is also a popular Middle Eastern Market Place called Afandi's.

You'll see homes and businesses in the area with bars on the window and reinforced doors. Most of the structures are older. There are several gated communities that have some town homes and condos that seem nice like Town Villas. There are also some roads around there along Alta that have multi-million dollar estates.

On the other side of Charleston there is the Arts District where the event First Friday is held every month. There are also the Las Vegas North Premium Outlets and it's close to Downtown.

In the South of Charleston direction there is a unique older neighborhood called the Scotch Eighty that I've seen people talk about on here before. You can google it. I think it even has it's own mention on the wiki page.

That's about all I know.

There are some nice housing around Charleston/Rancho but few condos. A few on Shadow and not much else. The Mayan Plaza has been bought up by Zappos I believe. Other than that much of the housing is either 60 and 70s homes ranging up to estates or junk. There are a few tracts as you get to Sahara that are pretty nice.

Also in the Rancho/Charleston area is the Las Vegas Police Department. They're actually right behind the Mayan Plaza Apartments. That was one of the places that I looked at but with fresh eyes to Las Vegas I said, "Nope. Not going to happen." That general area felt dangerous to me with bars on the windows and reinforced doors and security guards at the entrance of every retail outlet you walk into. I'm glad to hear about Zappos buying it up. After a year here I adjusted and realized that this is kind of common for Las Vegas and gates and guards don't keep people out that want to get in. Though living closer to the Strip and Downtown area is said to be some of the higher crime areas.

Maybe the office of the place they're looking at is in 89108? That happened to me once when I wanted to look at a place. I took down the address and it was the office listed and not the actual property in the area I was interested in.

I should probably mention what I know about 89108 area too. Along Jones there are a lot of houses, condos and apartments, but you're going to see that between the good properties there are blighted properties and homelessness. You'll see lots of trash littered along the street and in the yards. There will properties falling into disrepair with boarded up windows and people still living in them. You'll see families with very young children living on the street with all their possessions loaded in black plastic garbage bags in a shopping cart as they walk to and fro. You'll see entire strip mall business centers shut down and empty, but drive a block or two towards the highway and get to Rainbow and suddenly prosperity springs up with new shopping centers with packed parking lots and busy stores.

These are just the main roads I've seen. I haven't been deeper into the neighborhoods in that area.

While you are correct on parts of 89108 that is only the southern end. There is lots of reasonably livable lower middle class as you go north. None of it is Summerlin but it is livable. For condos there are set along the east side of the 95 and along Rainbow that are livable if money is an issue. There is even a reasonably nice place called Las Hadas buried in there...and there are some reasonably nice apartments up behind the Santa Fe Casino.

I was wondering about that further north area of 89108. After this thread I started looking on trulia for condos and saw some nice places near or past Cheyenne. Not much in ways of condos but it seems nicer there.

I agree along Rainbow seems to be really where it's nicer and as you go further north.

I live just north of Cheyenne. In the half acres but I sell RE periodically in 89108. Our primary zone is 89134 and 89129 but we hit the surrounds...89108, 89149, 89130, 89164, 89131. Love it out here...both to live and sell RE.

I live in 89108 off Rainbow and along with most of the immediate neighbors I know personally i could easily afford a more pretentious zipcode but it's basically pretty quiet in here and there is a great deal of retail nearby. Admittedly the major cross streets get a bit "interesting" at night especially at night but it's not scary.

Some of the apt/condo complexes are MUCH better than others in the area though so it pays to research.

My dream house is in this zipcode and if it ever returns to the market I won't hesitate to put another offer in on it even though it's a slightly more sketchy area than where I am now.

Thank you all this helps. I know there are area's that can be sketchy in this zip code but seems there are also some nice modest priced condo's. This is the address of the main building 2451 N. Rainbow. Another Zip code is 89128 and 89147 that I am currently looking at. Thanks all.

I know that area of Rainbow well! It is very close to me and I'm in 89128. That address on Rainbow is a nice area with lots of apartments and condos and shopping. Crossing 95 on the other side of Smoke Ranch Rd is nice medical business park filled with doctors' offices. This is where my doctors I go to are. Then drive 5 minutes North along Tenaya and there is Mountain View Hospital which is also nice and where my other doctors are and where I go for labs sometimes.

If you drive south on Tenaya the main Post Office is there and a High School.

Back to the address on Rainbow between smoke ranch and lake mead are two shopping centers with many nice places. You've got the Best in the West shopping center with TJ Maxx, Old Navy, Stein Mart, Jo-Ann's fabric, Best Buy and on the other side of the street is Cost Plus, Barnes and Noble, ect. Also the $4 matinee AMC movie theater is in this area and it's a nice one.

If you go North on Rainbow to Cheyenne then you get into another shopping center. It has Ross Dress for Less, Walmart, Pier 1 Imports, Colleen Consignments, UPS, ect. This Walmart doesn't sell produce but it does have some canned goods, boxed items and other food items that are kept in a cooler. Sometimes I find the food products at this Walmart are marked less than the same items at the Walmart Super Center off of Charleston. Across the street from this shopping center is a littler shopping center with Smith's where you can do some regular grocery shopping. There is also a bank in there, a couple fast food places and a scrubs store. Then on the North side of Cheyenne is more places to eat like Olive Garden, IHOP, Thai food and Chinese food. If you take Cheyenne west across 95 you'll find Target with a Starbucks inside.

There is also a drive thru Starbucks off of Rainbow by the spaghetti bowl if you're taking it to work one day.

I should also mention Lake Mead Blvd in this area is a big one where you're going to find a lot of stuff you're looking for and also along Buffalo. There is so much on these roads that it would take a long time to mention them all. One of the places you might be interested in is Whole Foods Market on lake mead and tenaya.
