Just wondering if you guys think i'm foolish or what! Mainly here to check out the cost of living for maybe a year, to have time to find a new position...(i've been looking already down there). How much will it cost me and my girlfriend to stay down there for that long? 1 br apartment, cable, gas, insurance...etc.

I know what you are thinking. "oh another tourist coming here to try to find a job, and taking someone else's job from a local!"

Its my dream to live in the desert, and hope my dream will come true. suggestions?

I never thought of it like that, but you do have a point.

Wife and I made the move from Vermont to Vegas a little over a year ago. Our situation may be a bit different as we flew out several times and bought a house before we moved.

We do NOT miss the cold, dreary winters or the high cost of living in VT which is similar to CT (Although much of CT is probably even more expensive than Vermont). We do love the SouthWest and the desert climate.

Have you ever been to Vegas? Off the strip?

Everyone is different and a lot depends on your age. If you're under 25 or so with minimal or no debt and have enough money for a few months rent and expenses pack up the car and head on out. Take a chance. There are always jobs for people who really want to work.

If you're a little older and/or have student loans, car loans, etc than you will have to consider those expenses and how you will cover them. You will want to have a bit more cash on hand to help make the move less stressful.

It's generally a good idea to have cash to cover 6 months expenses before moving but, of course people have done it with a lot less and much more. A lot of this depends on the individual(s).

You will pass out when you see what your rent will get you here compared to CT. Your dollars will go much further here in Vegas.

If you're young take a chance. It doesn't get any easier the older you get. Plus, CT will always be there if things don't work out.

We're doing a similar move this Summer, from Rhode Island to Las Vegas. We just got back from a week's scouting trip. We found the rental prices to be pretty similar to Rhode Island. We're currently in a 1600 s.f. condo for $1400/mo plus utilities. The prices for similar-sized houses were comparable in the area we are moving to, but the weather and other factors make it worthwhile. Even though it's not much of a monetary savings, we've reached the point where Henderson is the place we'd like to spend our time. I have a sales job that I can keep and work from my home office, and my wife is looking at transfers to a local college to finish her nursing program. Regarding expenses, it looks like about $4000 for the move, plus another $3000 or so to get into a rental home between first, security, etc.

The big issue, as it is for everyone moving to Vegas, except if they're retiring, is employment. The question is what are your skills, and what are the chances of getting a job quickly enough to keep you going?

The catch 22 is that Vegas gets so many transients that employers don't even want to look at an applicant until they establish residency. On the other hand, people moving there don't want to pull the trigger on the move until they have a job lined up. You may have to do the move on faith, and try to find a decent job in a difficult market.

My friend moved to Las Vegas about a year and half ago. He did come prepared with savings, and had no family obligations.

That said, he also had no job. He made it his '#1 job' to get a job.

He worked at it all week long (every week) and didn't blow money at the casino's or anything expensive...
and he got a pretty good job, and has been very happy.

The question you might want to ask yourself is, "If it doesn't work out, will I be OK?"

Examine the worst case scenario and see if you can live with that.

Well, I lived in CT for 2 years and you are making the right decision. If your main focus is COL, expect to pay at least 50% less by living in Vegas.

Las Vegans don't usually fault people for coming here for a better life because almost everyone here did just that. When I came here in 1964 I said if doesn't work out I can always go back home. I'm still hoping it works out.

Currently i'm 21 and have been working in IT since 18, a decent mid 40k salary, have a bit of savings...the rents here are a LOT more expensive than what i've scouted on craigslist and various other sites. By a lot i mean more than half...i'm from fairfield county CT which is right by NYC and a 1000sqft apartment here is north of $1300+ a month...the town i work in is closer to $1500-2000 range for a 1200sqft(Stamford), and a 700sqft for around $1000. There are apartments for around 8-900 but are in bad, slummy...poor towns normally.

I do have some sort of connection down there to possibly obtain a position. Also...currently i may be able to work remotely and have been trying to build up enough guts to ask.

First, though. I've never been to vegas... i can tell that I will love it. Although, i'm not making the move on just what i think, i'm aiming to be down there on the 13th of march and retun back to JFK in NY on the 20th.

Hoping to scope some places out, take a look. My main challenge is the transportation...did you know that you cannot rent a car untill 21? I didn't untill last night...bummer, that will not get me down though. I'm determined.
