Does anyone have an appliance repair guy that's familiar with sub zeros?

I had one guy take a look, lovely chap, very honest, said they're not his speciality, and suggested turning it off for a day to defrost it, before switching it back on.

Great guy, didn't even charge a call out charge, if his plan doesn't work I'll need someone a little more familiar with them though.

You need a refrigeration guy...Those things are closer to commercial than residential appliances. There is an outfit in town that claims to specialize in Sub Zero and similar high end stuff. SOS Appliance Repair. Has some reasonable reviews. Let us know how you make out.

The best option is to befriend an engineer at a resort. They have to fix these things every day. (Not that Sub-Zero units break often, just that a resort has hundreds of them running all day long.)

The good thing about Sub-Zero is that they were designed to be repairable, as opposed to residential crap appliances that were designed to be replaced. The defrost thermostat is the usual culprit, and they cost around $150. Although a casino engineer very likely has a few of these just lying around.

One of the reasons chefs tend to buy commercial equipment for their homes is they have buddies who can be counted on to fix this stuff in exchange for a case of beer or a bottle of bourbon.

Called these guys, and ended up speaking to Tom. Nice guy, pretty much knew what the problem was (well I told him, based on this video, which is exactly what I had
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8EWeq1V388). Apparently the full repair with a new condenser unit is $975. He reckons from what I've said that if thats the only problem, it should last a lot longer. I really don't want to get into a yearly $1k refrigerator repair bill!

I'm not quite sure I'm going to skulk around casino back corridors trying to befriend engineers, but its interesting, I always assumed these units were more mock industrial than actual industrial...

Given that I'm not going to subject my friend to 2 hours of watching a refrigerator being repaired on his last day in vegas I'm going to leave it for my return. I'll be switching off the fridge side, and leaving the door slightly open to avoid mould.

Don't leave it slightly open. Leave it WIDE open.

You want the condensation to evaporate as quick as possible.

Cool thanks will do.

Spoke to Econ Appliance. Took a lot of persuading before they'd grant me the privilege of discussing repairing it, since they "only repair and service appliances we sold", then got put through to someone that sounded like they had no teeth to try getting prices out of them. $120 service call, includes 15 mins, then another $25 for each 15 mins after that, plus parts and tax.

Was originally told it would be about 2 hours work, so I'd be on $320 without the part. Possibly not a terrible deal if the new evaporator is about $500.

Edit: which I'm now seeing can be ordered online for about $165. Hmmmmmm though doubtful that Econ Appliances are going to give it to me that cheap.

Find someone that charges a fixed rate fir diagnostics and then a fixed labor. Parts are always extra. I wouldn't want to pay a hourly fee.
