I have to agree with Scoop on the lack of intelligence in Vegas. There are some incredibly smart people here, but they are few and far between. The average person I encounter is 6 bricks shy of a dozen.

That being said, I like it here because I am not fond of people. I don't have to interact with anyone I don't want to.
There are 3 people in the whole city that I'd go out of my way to hang out with excluding my wife and kids.

As somebody who's lived on 3 continents, I'd say you're describing an American phenomenon in general.

Aside from a few cultural "centres" on the coasts, America is an intellectual wasteland. No appreciation for fine arts, literature, world events, etc..

I'm pretty sure most Americans couldn't even name the Vice President.

It's a good place to make money. That's about it...

If Joe Biden walked up to them and asked them what 2+2 is they'd struggle.

Any time I am in a group of people, like a waiting room, or grocery store, I cringe at the things I hear them saying.

^ This.

Just because "other places are bad, too" doesn't excuse the fact we're far worse.

On one hand, Las Vegas prides itself on being a blue-collar, old-religion, street-smart-not-book-smart city. On the other hand, some people get mighty indignant when anyone suggests that this isn't the most literate place in America.

But Vegas is basically Disney World for adults...

What did you expect when you moved there?

If you want to be to be around the smart folks with ambition, you need to be in the global power centers. NYC, London, etc..

You'll need to be half brilliant to grind out a decent living in those places though. Off you go!

Sometimes people have reasons for doing things that aren't typical or obvious. Like moving to Vegas like Scoop did. It's not for me to tell you why, but I'd have done the same thing he did if it was posed to me.

I moved here because I despise cold. I might need to find a vacation spot to go Dec-Feb.

My hometown has a higher cost of living than New York or London. Wrap your head around that for awhile.

I moved here because it was the best of a slew of bad choices. Neither my wife nor I had any desire to come here. We moved here anyway. The only difference between me and her, is that I think the average resident is a mouth-breathing, knuckle-dragging moron. And my wife thinks the vast majority of residents are mouth-breathing, knuckle-dragging morons.

But we completely agree that this is the worst place either of us has ever lived. And we have an extra continent on you.

City with a higher COL than London? In America? I doubt it...

Anyhow, obviously you and your wife were in a pinch. No shame in that...

But writing off all the people in a city, and blaming them for your discontent is simply childish.

You're responsible for where you are.

And if both of you are so high-brow, then why is it you couldn't hack it in a more "civilized" place? Good question to ask yourselves I think...

Yeah, London is ranked 1 or 3 behind cities in the Cayman Islands and Switzerland, depending on source.

If that ever changed, I would be first in line to sing this city's praises. But our population just ruins it for me. And the pleasant weather, low cost of living, and utter lack of natural disasters isn't enough to offset being surrounded by the barely-literate.
Apparently you and I run in completely different circles. Do you people ever get off the Strip? Do you really think that everyone here is a stripper, or a gambler, or a housekeeper? They aren't. We actually do have EVERY KIND OF PERSON here. At least we have had since 1964...that's as far back as I can go. Name any occupation and I probably know 1 to 100 who do that. What you probably don't know is that there are many occupations that you've probably never thought of, and that are (sort of) unique to Las Vegas. Take the electricians that have to know how to scuba dive that go under water at the Bellagio to repair the lights and pumps. There are literally 100s of unique jobs like that, and they don't necessarily have anything to do with the casinos. There are a lot of people in Las Vegas who travel for their jobs. They're here because it's a great place to live, but also because we have one of the world's leading airports so they can go anywhere on short notice. It goes on and on. Some of you don't realize it, some of you are afraid to admit it.
