The way I see it, it says 'hey parents' because the child may not be of the reading age. And if they just set out a display of fruit, no one would know what it's for. Then there is the bold print on the front bottom directly saying healthy snacks for kids.

That ambiguity is all one needs to make a case for their position.

I'd say EA is correct, in that depending on how you interpret what is essentially the moronic politicians battle cry of "for the chilllldddrennnn".

Example: vote to tax yourself an additional half-cent sales tax, it's for the chillllddddreennn". Implying that your sacrifice will in some way help the children. So, one could easily interpret Smith's intent as you, the shopper having a healthy snack as a sacrifice "for the children", or in other words so you live another day, and can keep paying your taxes "for the children".

It's an intentionally vague statement, designed to allow one to interpret how you like. If Smiths wanted to limit it to say children under 12, they could easily have written it that way. However, something tells me that they really don't care if an adult eats a banana when they are spending $100+ for a couple bags of groceries. I think labeling the person who says they do so as a "criminal" is going a bit far, given the circumstances.

If it shuts the kids up at the grocery store, I'm all for it. I also don't begrudge my fellow Americans a free apple. Why make a fuss over a fricken apple?

Anyone that pays any attention to human behavior should not be surprised.

I have seen this at my Smith's too. A good idea! And if the kids are occupied, mom will shop more! Probably a win/win for the store.
