In PA there is a place we used to go hike with some rocks 30+ feet high with sheer faces. A group of rescue climbers were practicing repelling down these rocks with stretchers. They did this for several hours. We were watching them do it for the last hour or so. One of the women who had been doing it, slipped and fell on some moss on the way to the truck to go home. Shattered her leg. On that day, walking on flat ground was more dangerous than hanging from ropes 30 feet off the ground.

Realistically, you have a 1 in 15,700 chance of dying while mountain hiking.
You have a 1 in 6,700 chance of being killed in a car, something most of us do on a daily basis.

Critical thinking needs more emphasis in school.

Sad to hear this but glad that it doesn't happen more often given the stunts that they do.

Sorry , to me that means nothing. You can also get out of bed and step on your kids toy hit your head and die. If there's a steep and narrow ledge and all it takes is something simple to miss a step, then I am not doing it. I have to think of my family and responsibilities to them, so I am not doing it.!

Good for you, doesn't mean you have to demonize those that don't share your reservations.

They said on the radio that the lady lost her footing and the guy was trying to reach / save her and they both went over. So much for calling them a bunch of idiots, huh?
