My son just got his first job, and I was befuddled when he showed me his first paycheck.

NAC: CHAPTER 608 - COMPENSATION, WAGES AND HOURS

For those who don't want to follow the link (pdf).

Minimum wage is 8.25 , unless the employer offers health insurance, then it is 7.25.
That's $58 for 8 hours of work.

Thoughts?

Don't forget, that's before social security and Medicare taxes ! ( everybody pays those, no matter their wages ) and all they have to do is offer medical insurance, they don't have to hardcore subsidize it.

Living wage, not in my opinion but its more than enough to put a few bucks in a teenager pocket without getting a handout from the parents. The sad truth is there is alot of service non tipped casino personal making only a couple of bucks over minimum wage.

I worked at Burger King in the 80's during high school. $3 per hour was the minimum wage then and I was working 30 hours on average. If you use one of those calculators that will give you the buying power of $3 in 1987 to what its worth in 2016 its $6.42 with an annual inflation rate 2.66%. I also had another job in the morning delivering the local newspaper that took me from 4am-7am to complete and paid about $500 a month. If the minimum wage today is $8.25 then its actually pretty good compared to 1987. Any thoughts?

I knew a person in the mid eighties that survived on fast food wages. Kept an a 1 bedroom apartment by himself on the west end of town and bought his own food and clothing without any public assistance.

A teachable moment. Sit him down and make up some bills. Then ask him what is his dream lifestyle. As he mentions house, cars, travel, etc just let him know there are certain jobs that will pay enough to have that lifestyle.

That job may require a degree so the better he does in school the more options he may have.
Now if he wants self employment education is still important.

I googled "inflation calculator", and the site I tried, says that the $1.55/hour I earned at my first minimum wage job in 1975 would be about $6.90/hour in 2015. So minimum wage hasn't just kept pace with inflation, it's actually exceeded it. It really doesn't seem there is any need for an increase beyond what it's already done. Minimum wage jobs are not supposed to be life long career positions. They are for teeny boppers and old people to enter/leave the job market.
