Sports betting has faced the same demise as table games. Most places have reduced their offerings and limits the past 5 years. I used to bet 5k/week at Coasts and Stations, but they've changed their odds and I don't play there anymore.

William Hill and Cantor ruined betting in Vegas, as they bought out several independent bookmakers (Hard Rock, Venetian, Lucky's, Leroy's, Cal Neva) and require supervisor approval on all wagers. Boyd Gaming recently bought out Aliante which axed another independent out.

If they "ruined" it, why is sports betting handle at record levels?

Sometimes it's useful to look at the actual numbers. Here's some historical data

http://gaming.unlv.edu/reports/NV_1984_present.pdf

For the strip, slot revenue peaked in 2007, and has never come back close to hitting that number. For table games, there was a local peak in 2007, and, of course, it dropped off during the heart of the recession. But it came back, peaked again in 2013, and while off that peak, is still above the 2007 peak. So tables have actually recovered better than slots have.

If I were a casino exec, I'd try to figure out why table are doing better than slots, percentage-wise. I'd also try to figure out what is driving the drop off from 2013 till now.

The table increase and then drop in 2014 is well known, it came from baccarat play. The anti-corruption measures in China which hammered Macau's revenues also impacted Las Vegas to a lesser degree. Removing baccarat play from the table revenue numbers and you'll see that since 2009 the Strip has seen modest, but steady uptick in play. The pre-recession peak may take another decade to reach again, the resorts have basically come to accept this and have adjusted their programming to overcome the loss of gaming revenue.

Lol OK. Let's properly rephrase that for you.

Mobile betting apps have ruined sports betting for YOU, but for the vast majority of bettors who would rather not have to drive, stand in line to bet and to cash while being exposed to smoke and deadbeats. And for the books that offer them, the increase in handle has been well worth it.

I know it ruined the chance for bettors who have time and desire to go find an outlier line to have a lot more opportunities, but that's progress for you.
