I will be moving to Vegas next year from my farm in Michigan. Eventually i would like a horse again. I understand the cost of feeding a horse in the desert. What I am confused about is the zoning. It seems many time a 'horse property' is advertised for sale but the house is in the middle of the city? In the midwest no livestock is allowed within city limits. If anyone could explain this, and/or share thier experiences of owning a horse in Vegas i would be very appreciative. Tyia.

When is horse property not horse property? Lots of places in Las Vegas. First off Clark County is the underlying municipality for most of the valley. The cities take up pieces of the valley but are actually smaller than Clark County unincorporated and smaller in population.

Equestrian zoning is short hand for the so called "rural" properties. These have half acre minimum lot sizes and streets without curbs, sidewalks or street lights. Basically the idea is a horse can be ridden on the shoulder of the roads.

All the cities have a similar zone though they differ in detail. The Clark County version is reasonably permissive. The cities may be more restrictive.

As the cities grew they have in places surrounded county islands. I live in Lone Mountain which is a county island of about 15 square miles entirely surrounded by the City of Las Vegas. In other places the land has gone to the city but the ruralish zoning remains. There are such places in the center of the city.

Further you need to be careful of HOAs and even restrictive CC&Rs. Some cul-de-sacs that look very horsey may not be. Best idea is find a place that already has stalls and other facilities.

There are identified trails that enable one to get into the Spring Mountains to the west. Many however trailer to the park facilities on the western edge. They include both a trail head leading into the mountains and a covered riding rink.

In general you can have two horses on a half acre. I think that too small.. An acre or more would be better.

And you can have horses in the central city but you would pretty much have to trailer them out. I have a friend with an acre and a half and a stable off Lindell near Charleston. He no longer has horses but his set up could easily support a couple and would be legal.

I thought this had to do with eating horses. I guess I'm in the wrong thread.

There are a number of properties on the city's northwest side where horses are boarded, and some offer riding lessons.
